What renters said

I scheduled, with Legacy, a same day drop-off and pick-up. After consulting with Legacy, we decided on a 15 yard dumpster. Legacy arrived, at my house, at the scheduled time, and conducted a smooth drop-off.

A dumpster works best when the mess is still being made. You fill it over a week of demo or a month of weekend cleanouts, and it leaves when you're done. This page covers where the bin goes, what can't go in any bin in California, and when a pickup or the free city program makes more sense.

What's included, step by step

  1. Pick a size. A 15-yard bin or a 20-yard bin. Describe the project and we'll help you choose.
  2. Know the price. 15-yard $479 · 20-yard $579, delivery and pickup included. Prices are for addresses within about 10 miles of North Hollywood (91606). Farther out? Call or text for a price.
  3. Drop-off. The bin is set in your driveway on the scheduled day.
  4. Fill it on your schedule. Load it as the work happens.
  5. Pickup. Call or text when it's full or the job is done, and it's hauled away.

Before the bin arrives

  • Measure the driveway.
  • Move cars, trash cans and anything low-hanging out of the drop zone.
  • Check for overhead wires or branches above the spot.
  • Decide who on the job is allowed to load it, so neighbors' junk doesn't end up in it.
  • Set aside paint, batteries, electronics and chemicals for a separate drop-off.

California and LA rules that apply

What can't go in any bin

Home-generated needles and sharps can never go in a roll-off or C&D bin under state law.[1] Use a sharps container and a mail-back or drop-off program.

ItemWhy it stays out
Paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicalsHazardous waste is illegal in the garbage[2]; even dried paint is banned[3]
Batteries of every typeBanned from trash, recycling and organics bins[2]
TVs, monitors, laptops, printersOn California's banned-from-trash list[2]
TiresBanned from the trash[2]
Propane tanksCompressed gas cylinders are banned[2]
Fridges, freezers, AC unitsRefrigerant must be removed first by a certified recycler or technician[4],[5]
Suspect asbestos, treated woodAsbestos is banned from the trash[2]; treated wood is hazardous[2]

Parking, sweeping and fire days

Posted LA street-sweeping routes are swept every other week, with citations for vehicles in restricted areas on sweeping days.[6] In the hills, Red Flag days ban parking on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and vehicles there are towed,[7] which can move a delivery or pickup day.

Burbank

Burbank rents its own 2- and 3-yard temporary bins to residents on a Burbank Water & Power account.[8]

What affects the price

  • Size. The 20-yard bin holds more than the 15.
  • Rental length. A weekend job and a month-long remodel are priced differently.
  • What goes in. Heavy material like concrete, dirt and tile uses up weight capacity fast.
  • Placement. Driveway placement is simplest; anything involving the street adds steps.

Free city options vs. paying a hauler

Before renting anything for household junk, check the free options. City of LA homes serviced by LA Sanitation get unlimited bulky item pickup at no extra charge,[9] booked at least one business day before trash day.[9] LA Sanitation also runs free Saturday bulky drop-off days once a month at yards in Sun Valley and Northridge.[9]

Those programs don't take construction materials such as concrete, bricks and dirt,[9] and they run on the City's calendar. A bin earns its cost when you're generating debris over days, when the material isn't bulky-pickup eligible, or when you want to fill it at your own pace. If the pile already exists and you'd rather not lift it, a junk pickup may cost less than a rental.

Where it goes afterward

Mixed remodel debris from the City of LA goes to City-certified C&D processors, and LA Sanitation publishes each one's recycling rate.[10] Regular non-hazardous waste from LA County homes and businesses can go to a landfill such as Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar, which doesn't take hazardous or liquid waste, car batteries or whole tires.[11] Anything that shouldn't have been in the bin has to be pulled out and taken to the right drop-off.

Dumpster rental: questions

What dumpster sizes do you have, and what do they cost?

Two: 15-yard: $479 (includes 1 ton of disposal, delivery and pickup), and 20-yard: $579 (includes 2 tons of disposal, delivery and pickup). Prices are for addresses within about 10 miles of North Hollywood (91606). Farther out? Call or text for a price. The 15 suits a garage cleanout, a small kitchen or bath remodel, or yard cleanup. The 20 is for larger remodels, roofing and flooring tear-outs, or a whole-house cleanout.

Should I rent a dumpster or book a junk pickup?

Rent the bin when the work will take days and you'll be adding to it as you go. Book a pickup when everything is already piled up and ready. With a pickup, the crew does all the lifting and loading, and for a pile that already exists it's often the cheaper option.

Can the dumpster go on the street in Los Angeles?

Most customers put it in the driveway, which keeps it off the street entirely. Ask us about your street.

Can I get same-day drop-off?

Sometimes; it depends on what's already booked that day. One customer had a 15-yard bin dropped off and picked up the same day. Text or call with your address, the size you want and your timing, and you'll hear back on availability. Having the driveway clear before the truck arrives keeps a fast turnaround on track.

What can't go in a dumpster?

In California: household hazardous waste, all batteries, paint (even dried), TVs, monitors and computers, tires, propane tanks and home-generated sharps. Fridges, freezers and AC units need their refrigerant removed by a certified recycler or an EPA-certified technician before disposal. Old material that may contain asbestos stays out too.

Can needles or sharps go in a roll-off?

No. State law specifically bars home-generated sharps from any roll-off container, including construction and demolition bins, as well as from trash, recycling and green bins. Use a sharps container and a mail-back program or a household hazardous waste drop-off instead.

Can I put concrete, dirt or rock in the bin?

Ask about weight limits first. Heavy material fills a bin's weight capacity long before it fills the space, so a bin loaded with broken concrete or soil is a different job from one filled with drywall and cabinets. Tell us what you're tearing out when you call.

Does street sweeping affect a bin or truck on the street?

Yes. Posted LA sweeping routes are swept every other week, and vehicles in restricted spots on sweeping days get cited. In hillside fire zones, Red Flag days ban parking on posted streets and illegally parked vehicles are towed, which can affect delivery and pickup timing.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

Tell us how long your project should take when you call. Rental length and any charge over the included weight are confirmed when you book. Open dates change, so ask when you reach out.

Is a dumpster the cheapest way to clear household junk in LA?

Not always. City of LA homes serviced by LA Sanitation get free, unlimited bulky item pickup at the curb, booked at least one business day ahead. If you're clearing furniture and mattresses and can wait for trash day, that may beat any rental.
