How do I get rid of a couch in the Valley?
Text us a photo of the couch, sectional, recliner or whatever furniture needs to go. We text back a price and a time. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. The crew carries it out from inside, including upstairs rooms and tight doorways, loads it, and sweeps up. You don't need to move anything to the curb.
What we take
- Couches, sofas, loveseats and sectionals
- Recliners and ottomans
- Mattresses, box springs and bed frames
- Dressers, armoires and nightstands
- Dining tables and chairs
- Desks, office chairs and bookshelves
- Patio furniture
- Pool tables and treadmills
Ask us first
- We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.
How it works
Most jobs go from first text to swept-up driveway the same way.
How much does furniture removal cost?
A single couch is priced by the space it takes in the truck and the labor to carry it out. A sofa from a ground-floor living room costs less than a sectional from an upstairs bedroom.
Text us a few photos and your ZIP. You get a price back by text, and that's the number you pay unless what's there is different from what was in the photos.
Fastest quote: text photos of your items to (909) 566-3090.
Furniture is the most common single item people want gone, and it's also the hardest to move alone. A sofa is heavy, awkward and wider than most hallways are long enough to turn. Here's what the job involves and what your other options are.
What's included, step by step
- A photo of the piece and the route. One shot of the furniture and one of the doorway, stairwell or hall it has to pass through tells the crew what to bring.
- A price and a time by text. You confirm, pick a window, and get a heads-up text before arrival.
- Disassembly where needed. Legs come off, sectionals separate, bed frames and bunk beds break down, and glass tops are lifted off and carried separately.
- The carry. Pieces are walked out on their edge or end to clear tight doorways and stair landings, then loaded.
- A last look. The crew checks under where the furniture stood and sweeps up the dust and debris that's usually hiding there.
Getting furniture ready
- Empty every drawer, shelf and cushion crease. Coins, remotes and paperwork turn up in sofas all the time.
- Take framed art and mirrors off nearby walls along the carry path.
- Unplug power recliners and lift chairs, and tuck the cord under the seat.
- Bag the screws and brackets from anything you've already taken apart.
- Remove loose glass shelves or tabletops if you can do it safely, or point them out.
- Tell us which pieces stay if the room has a mix.
California and LA rules that apply
Furniture isn't hazardous waste, so the rules are mostly about where you're allowed to leave it and what programs will take it.
Curbside rules. LA Sanitation lists furniture as an accepted bulky item.[1] Glendale only takes what's on its bulky list, and anything with glass, like a mirrored dresser or a cabinet with glass doors, must be wrapped or it stays on the curb.[2],[3] Pasadena won't take any single item heavier than two people can safely lift.[4]
Apartment buildings. LA's free program is aimed at homes LA Sanitation services, and its single-family pages cover buildings of 1 to 4 units.[1] That leaves out a lot of renters. In North Hollywood's 91601 ZIP, about 70% of housing units are in buildings with 5 or more units.[5] Glendale gives buildings with a private hauler up to four free appointments a year, each capped at four bulky items,[6] and Pasadena apartment residents go through their building's private hauler.[4]
Sleeper sofas. California's mattress recycling program doesn't cover sofa beds,[7] so the free Bye Bye Mattress drop-off isn't an option for a sleeper.
Leaving it out. Setting a couch on the sidewalk or in an alley without a booked pickup is illegal dumping under Penal Code §374.3,[8] with a first-conviction fine of $250 to $1,000.[8]
What affects the price
Two couches that look alike in photos can be very different jobs.
- Size and bulk. A loveseat takes a small corner of the truck. A five-piece sectional with a chaise takes a real share of it.
- Floor and route. Ground-floor living rooms with a straight shot to the door are quickest. Third-floor walk-ups, spiral stairs and long courtyard walks add labor.
- Weight hidden inside. Sleeper sofas, power recliners, solid-wood armoires and marble-top tables are much heavier than they look.
- Disassembly. Bunk beds, platform beds, modular shelving and office cubicles take time to break down safely.
- Loading access. In Burbank, a yellow curb allows loading for up to 20 minutes between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. unless signs say otherwise,[9] which is often enough for one piece but not for a room.
Free city options vs. paying a hauler
If the furniture is in good shape, a charity pickup might cost nothing. If it's worn, city bulky pickup is the free route. A paid crew fills the gaps.
| Option | Cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Salvation Army pickup | Free[10] | Unbroken furniture only; rules vary by location[10] |
| Out of the Closet pickup | Free | Needs at least two large accepted items[11] |
| St. Vincent de Paul pickup | Free[12] | Items must be outside at street level; crews don't enter homes[12] |
| Habitat LA ReStore pickup | Fee[13] | Ground floor, garage or curb only; nothing broken[13],[14] |
| City bulky pickup | Free in LA; Burbank charges no fee for couches, chairs, dressers or tables[15] | You carry it to the curb and wait for the booking |
| Paid crew | Priced by truck space and labor | Comes inside and handles the carry |
Pickup Please won't take couches at all, and it only collects items one person can easily carry.[16] Each city's rules are in its guide: Los Angeles, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena.
Hiring a crew is worth it when the piece is upstairs, when you're out of the unit by a deadline, or when charities have already said no.
Where it goes afterward
What happens to a piece of furniture depends mostly on its condition.
- Resale through charity. Goodwill Southern California lists sofas, tables, chairs and dressers as acceptable, but only in clean, sellable shape; it doesn't repair or reupholster.[17] Habitat LA ReStores want furniture with no broken or missing pieces.[13]
- Items charities skip. Goodwill doesn't take cribs or other infant gear,[17] and Out of the Closet won't take office furniture, wall units or china cabinets.[11]
- Recycling. Metal frames, filing cabinets and steel desks can go for scrap metal.
- Disposal. Worn upholstery, particleboard and broken pieces usually end up in a landfill.
If you donate yourself and want the deduction, the IRS says household items must be in good used condition or better,[18] and a gift of $250 or more needs a written acknowledgment from the charity.[18] Ask a tax professional about your situation.

What customers said about this job
Excellent service! Brian and Carlos did a great job removing a couch from my house in Studio City. It was located upstairs and through a tight doorway, but they managed to get the job done quickly and without any damage.
I had a great experience with Legacy! I submitted a form online to remove a loveseat and ottoman in North Hollywood, and Ricardo got back to me right away. He gave me a quote and said they had a slot open the following morning. Carlos and Brian came at the top of the hour and they had my furniture removed within five minutes. They were very professional and friendly. I shopped around to compare prices and Legacy was the most reasonable option. Glad I chose them and I would highly recommend!
I chose Legacy Junk Removal for their commitment to donation and recycling. Brian and Carlos arrived on time and removed the sofa and loveseat cleanly and easily, making room for something newer thank 40 years.. They explained what they were going to do with it and after a speedy Zelle transaction they were on their way. If anyone in the Valley Village or surrounding areas is in need of anything removed, I would highly recommend this company.

Furniture removal: questions
Will you take just one couch?
Yes. A single sofa, recliner or dresser is a normal pickup. Send one photo of the piece and one of the route to the door, and the price comes back by text. Small jobs like this are often the easiest to fit into a same-day or next-morning opening.
Can a sectional come down the stairs without scraping the walls?
That's the careful part of the job. Customers have written about couches coming out of upstairs rooms and narrow halls without damage. Mention the stairs, the tightest turn and any elevator when you text, so the crew arrives knowing whether to split the sectional or remove its legs first.
Do I need to take the furniture apart?
No. The crew handles any disassembly needed to get a piece through a doorway, such as taking legs off a sofa or separating a sectional. If a bed frame or desk is already apart, bundle the hardware in a bag so it goes out with the rest.
Will my furniture be donated?
We donate items that are in fair shape so they get a second life, and recycle what we can. When your items are donated, you'll get a donation receipt from the drop-off location within 14 business days. No one can promise a given item will be accepted, because charities turn away anything stained, broken or missing parts. If donation matters to you, say so before loading and you'll get a straight answer about the odds.
Can I get a donation receipt for a couch?
If it's donated, yes: the receipt comes from the drop-off location, within 14 business days. IRS rules say household items must be in good used condition or better to be deductible, and a gift of $250 or more needs a written acknowledgment from the charity. Ask a tax professional about the rest.
Does the City of LA pick up couches for free?
Yes, for homes LA Sanitation services. Furniture is on its list of accepted bulky items, and you book at least one business day before your regular trash day through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. You still have to get the couch to the curb yourself.
I live in a large apartment building. Can I use city bulky pickup?
It depends on the city. LA Sanitation's single-family pages cover homes of 1 to 4 units that it services. In Glendale, buildings with 5 or more units book up to four free appointments a year through their private hauler, each capped at four items. In Pasadena, apartment residents ask their building's private hauler.
What about a sofa bed?
The mattress inside a sleeper sofa isn't covered by California's free mattress recycling program, and Goodwill won't take sofa-bed mattresses. A crew can take the whole sofa as one piece. Just mention it's a sleeper so the extra weight of the fold-out frame is planned for.
Can I leave a couch in the alley for someone to take?
No. Leaving furniture on public or private property without permission counts as illegal dumping under the California Penal Code, and fines start at $250 for a first conviction. In LA, dumped items can be reported at MyLA311, and someone else may end up paying to clear it.
Do I need to be home for the pickup?
Tell us when you book. If the furniture is on a porch or in an open garage, or someone can let the crew in, the rest can often be handled by text, including a photo once the space is clear.
Can you take furniture the same day?
Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Several customers have had a couch gone within a couple of hours of reaching out. Text photos early in the day, with any stairs or tight turns in the shot, for the best chance.
Do you take office furniture?
Yes: desks, office chairs, filing cabinets, bookshelves and conference tables. Empty drawers and cabinets first, and shred or remove files. Many donation centers don't accept office furniture, so plan on most of it being recycled or disposed of.
