How does shed or playset removal work?

Empty the shed if you can, then text us photos of it and the path to the street. We text back a price, take it apart on site, carry out the pieces and whatever was inside, and sweep up. The same goes for playsets, old decks, fences and above-ground pools.

What we take

  • Wood, metal and plastic sheds
  • Playsets and swing sets
  • Old decks and railings
  • Wood and chain-link fencing
  • Above-ground pools
  • Gazebos and pergolas

Ask us first

  • Sheds with electrical wiring: have it disconnected first.
  • Concrete slabs: tell us first.
  • We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.

Always included

Loading, hauling, disposal and sweep-up are included.

How our pricing works

How it works

Most jobs go from first text to swept-up driveway the same way.

  1. Send photos

Text a few photos and your ZIP, or use the quote form. Wide shots of the pile or room work best.

“Sent them a pic and they sent a quote with a range low to high…” Tim S.

  2. Get a price by text

We text back a price based on truck space and labor.

“Got a call back from Ricardo immediately after placing online request.” Stacy O.

  3. Pick a time

Same-day and next-morning pickups most days. We give you a window and text before we arrive.

“They gave me a 2 hr service window and texted me 20 min before their arrival.” Janet S.

  4. We haul it and sweep up

We carry everything out from wherever it sits, load the truck, and sweep up before we leave.

How much does shed removal cost?

Pricing is based on how much truck space your items take up, plus labor. Free photo quotes by text: send photos and get an exact price. Stairs, long carries and heavy material like concrete or dirt change the number. Your quote includes loading, hauling, disposal and sweep-up. The price we quote is the price you pay.

Text us a few photos and your ZIP. You get a price back by text, and that's the number you pay unless what's there is different from what was in the photos.

Fastest quote: text photos of your items to (909) 566-3090.

A shed is really two jobs: taking down a small structure, and clearing out whatever has been stored in it for years. The first is mostly labor. The second is where the rules come in, because the corner of a shed is where old paint, weed killer, fuel and propane end up. Here's how shed, playset and deck removal works, and what has to be handled separately.

What's included, step by step

  1. Photos. Send the shed from a couple of angles, a look inside, and the path from the backyard to the street.
  2. A price by text. Size, material, contents and the carry all factor in.
  3. Teardown. The crew takes the roof, walls, doors and floor apart on site.
  4. Carry-out. Panels, framing and contents are carried to the truck and loaded.
  5. Cleanup. The footprint and path get swept.

The same process covers playsets, swing sets, old decks, fencing, gazebos and above-ground pools. One customer summed up a playset job this way:

Great experience with Legacy Junk Removal. I was able to schedule next day. They showed up on time, took everything, broke down old play equipment, and even swept up. No hidden fees or overages. Would recommend and use again.

Playsets, decks and fences

Wooden playsets are usually bolted together, so they come apart in large sections rather than being cut up. Decks take longer: boards come up first, then the joists, and posts set in concrete footings are the slow part, so mention them. For fences, tell us the length and whether the posts stay. Deck and fence lumber may be pressure-treated, which matters for where it can go (see below).

Before shed removal day

  • Pull out paint, stains, pesticides, pool chemicals and fuel cans.
  • Remove propane tanks and anything pressurized.
  • Have an electrician disconnect any wiring or lights.
  • Decide whether the slab stays, and tell us if it goes.
  • Keep anything you want from inside, and label it.
  • If the shed is old, get suspect siding or roofing tested for asbestos.
  • Drain an above-ground pool fully, well after the last chemical dose.

California and LA rules that apply

The shed itself

Some materials are hazardous no matter how small the job. Chemically treated wood must be managed as hazardous waste,[1] and asbestos can turn up in older cement, roofing and siding.[1]

What's inside it

ItemThe ruleWhere it goes
Paint, including dried paintCan't go in the trash in California[2]PaintCare drop-off, free[3]
Pesticides, pool chemicals, solventsHazardous, not trash[1]S.A.F.E. Center or HHW facility
Propane cylindersBanned from the trash[1]S.A.F.E. Center[4]
Motor oil and filtersBanned from the trash[1]Certified used-oil collection center
Batteries of every kindBanned from all bins[1]Battery or HHW drop-off

City of LA S.A.F.E. Centers take up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.[4] The two nearest the Valley are on Randall Street in Sun Valley and on Balboa Boulevard in Northridge, open weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[5],[6]

Above-ground pools

LA County Public Works advises letting chemicals dissipate before draining, waiting at least five days after adding chemicals, and never backwashing a filter into the street or a storm drain.[7] Storm drains carry water to creeks and the ocean without treatment.[7]

What affects the price

  • Size and material. A plastic garden shed and a framed wood shed with a shingled roof are different jobs.
  • Contents. A packed shed can double the load.
  • The slab. Concrete adds weight and work.
  • Distance to the truck. Long backyard carries, stairs and narrow side yards take more time.
  • Hidden hazards. Treated wood or suspect siding has to be handled separately.

Free city options vs. paying a hauler

Free options exist for pieces of a shed, not for the whole thing. LA Sanitation lists large wood pieces and doors among bulky items,[8] but it won't take construction materials such as concrete, bricks or dirt,[8] and crews pick up only what's on the work order.[9] Glendale's bulky pickup excludes construction materials and lumber,[10] and Pasadena's excludes construction and roofing material.[11]

Burbank excludes fencing, roofing and other construction materials from bulky pickup, and points residents to its 2-yard rental bin instead.[12] Its bulky pickup also adds a special handling fee for gas lawnmowers, chainsaws and leaf blowers.[12]

If you can take the shed apart yourself, cut it to size and wait for a pickup, the city route can work for part of it. Paying a crew makes sense when you want the structure, the contents and the cleanup handled in one visit.

Where it goes afterward

Wood and lumber count as organic waste under SB 1383,[13] so clean, untreated wood can be recovered rather than buried. Metal sheds and frames are scrap: SA Recycling's Sun Valley yards take metal and large appliances, but not propane tanks, oil, fuel or antifreeze,[14] and they ask anyone selling scrap for a government photo ID.[14] Tools, bikes and patio furniture in good shape can go to donation. Treated wood and chemicals leave the load and go to hazardous waste handling.

Shed removal: questions

Do you take the shed apart?

Yes. The crew breaks it down where it stands, whether it's wood, metal or plastic, then carries out the walls, roof panels, framing and floor in pieces. Playsets, gazebos, pergolas and old decks come apart the same way, and you don't need any tools of your own on hand.

Do I need to empty the shed first?

It helps, but it isn't required. Ordinary contents like tools, boxes, bikes and old furniture can go in the same load; just include them in your photos so the price covers everything. What you do need to pull out first are paints, chemicals, fuel cans and propane tanks.

Do you remove the concrete slab?

Mention it when you send photos. A slab is heavy, it's priced differently from the shed itself, and there are limits to how much weight one load can carry. Many people leave the slab as a patio or pad and just remove the structure.

What do I do with the paint and chemicals stored in the shed?

Take them to a household hazardous waste drop-off. In California, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals and solvents can't go in the trash, and even dried paint can't either. City of LA S.A.F.E. Centers take up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit, and PaintCare sites take house paint for free.

Can a propane tank go with the shed?

No. Compressed gas cylinders, including BBQ and camping propane tanks, are on California's list of items banned from the trash. Take them to a S.A.F.E. Center or another hazardous waste collector, or ask the store where you buy propane whether it takes old cylinders back. They should never ride in a junk load.

Is an old shed hazardous?

Sometimes. Some older cement, roofing and siding can contain asbestos, which CalRecycle lists among building materials banned from the trash. Pressure-treated or chemically treated lumber has to be managed as hazardous waste. If the shed is decades old, have suspect material tested before anyone breaks it apart.

What if the shed has electrical wiring?

Have the power disconnected before the crew arrives. An electrician should make any wired shed safe, including lights, outlets or a subpanel, so the structure can be taken apart without live wires in it. Mention the wiring when you send photos so we know it has been handled before the crew shows up.

Can you remove an above-ground pool?

Yes. Drain it first, and the crew takes down the walls, liner and frame. LA County advises letting pool chemicals dissipate and not draining within five days of adding them, and never letting pool water or backwash run into the street or storm drain.

Will the City's bulky pickup take shed panels?

It depends on the city and the material. LA Sanitation lists large wood pieces and doors as bulky items but won't take construction materials like concrete, bricks or dirt, and crews only take what's on the work order. Glendale won't take lumber or construction materials, and Burbank excludes fencing and roofing.

Can a metal shed be recycled?

The metal can. Scrap yards take metal, and the SA Recycling yards in Sun Valley take large appliances as well, though they don't take propane tanks, oil, fuel or antifreeze. If you're taking it yourself, bring government-issued photo ID; SA Recycling requires it from anyone selling scrap.

Will you clean up the area?

Yes. After the last pieces are loaded, the crew sweeps up so the spot is clear. Tell us if the shed sat on dirt or gravel; screws and nails in the soil are worth a second look, especially where kids or pets play.
