Studio City runs from the flats along the LA River up into the hills, and the difference between those two ends decides how a haul goes. This page covers the access realities, the City rules, the Universal City exception, and where things can go afterward.

What jobs look like in Studio City

Studio City sits between Lankershim Boulevard on the east and Fulton Avenue on the west, and it takes in a long stretch of the Los Angeles River.[1] Its community plan area runs south all the way to Mulholland Drive,[1] where Wilacre Park and Fryman Canyon Park sit on the ridge.[2] Down in the flats, City Planning notes single-family neighborhoods with multi-family housing concentrated along Moorpark Street.[1]

The numbers for ZIP 91604 show how mixed it is: about 40% of housing units are detached houses and about 52% are in buildings with five or more units,[3] with roughly 55% of homes rented.[3] The median building dates from 1972.[3]

In practice, that means two kinds of job:

Up the hill

On a street that climbs toward Mulholland, the question is rarely the item. It's the path: a steep driveway, outside steps down to a yard, a narrow street where the truck parks down the block. We plan the carry before we arrive, so photos of the approach matter as much as photos of the junk. A backyard spa up here is a bigger project than a couch; see hot tub removal for how that works.

In the flats

Around Moorpark and Ventura Boulevard, jobs look more like apartment and condo work: elevator access, loading zones and building move-out rules. Ryan F. wrote on Google that the crew removed "a couch from my house in Studio City. It was located upstairs and through a tight doorway, but they managed to get the job done quickly and without any damage." Tight turns like that are routine; we just need to know about them when you send photos.

Local rules that affect your junk

Studio City is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood,[4] so LA Sanitation handles bulky pickup and the City's rules apply. One exception sits right next door.

Universal City is on LA County's list of unincorporated areas, not a City of LA community.[5] Mapping L.A. counts it inside Studio City,[4] and City Planning describes it as land governed and planned by the County.[1] Services there come from a mix of City, County and private providers,[6] so don't assume LASAN pickup at a Universal City address.

For City of LA addresses in Studio City:

  • Bulky pickup: free at the curb for homes LASAN services, on trash day, requested at least one business day ahead.[7] MyLA311 also takes requests at 311 or online.[8] See bulky item pickup in LA.
  • Hot tubs and spas: drain carefully. LA County's guidance is to let chemicals dissipate, wait at least five days after adding chemicals, and never backwash a filter into the street or a storm drain,[9] because storm drains carry water to creeks and the ocean untreated.[9] Full steps in how to get rid of a hot tub.
  • Appliances: LASAN picks up fridges, washers, dryers, AC units and water heaters for free with a day's notice, doors off the fridge.[10] Central AC is different: it's dismantled on site and its refrigerant must be recovered before disposal.[11]
  • Electronics: TVs, monitors and computers are banned from the trash in California.[12] They can go out through bulky pickup or to a S.A.F.E. Center.[13] See TVs and electronics.
  • Paint and chemicals: not at the curb.[7] PaintCare sites take house paint for free in original, labeled cans of 5 gallons or less.[14],[15]
  • Remodel debris: in Hillside Construction Regulation districts, work is limited to weekdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with interior work only on Saturdays.[16] See construction debris.

Red Flag parking in the hills

On LAFD-declared Red Flag days, parking is banned on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and cars left there are towed.[17] The LAFD says those days average four to seven a year.[17] If your street carries Red Flag signs, check the forecast before booking any pickup that needs curb space.

City pickup or a hauler in Studio City

City bulky pickupHiring a hauler

Getting it to the curbYour job, even from a hillside yardThe crew carries it, stairs and all
Concrete, brick, dirtNot taken at the curb[7]Ask first
Universal City addressesDon't assume it appliesSame quote-by-text process

The City option is a good deal if the item is already by the curb on a flat street. Up the hill, the carry to the curb is often the whole job, and that's the part a hauler is actually for.

Getting a dumpster in Studio City

If your street is narrow or steep, finding a legal spot for a bin can be harder than filling it, so start by asking whether you need one at all. For a single cleanout, a truck that loads and leaves the same day avoids the question; dumpster rental vs. junk removal compares the two.

For temporary no-parking signs, call LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division at (213) 485-2298.[18] Rules for a bin on a private driveway aren't published anywhere we could verify. See dumpster rental.

Where things can go near Studio City

  • Donation: Goodwill's North Hollywood store at 5855 Lankershim Blvd.[19] and its Sherman Oaks store at 14760 Ventura Blvd.[20] are the closest. Out of the Closet offers a free pickup when you have at least two large furniture items or ten large bags or boxes.[21]
  • Hazardous waste and e-waste: the East Valley S.A.F.E. Center, 11025 Randall St., Sun Valley, weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[22] Staff unload while you stay in the car.[13]
  • Remodel debris: LASAN publishes the City-certified C&D processors; several are in Sun Valley, including Crown Recycling Services on DeGarmo Ave. and East Valley Diversion on Sheldon St.[23]
  • Landfill: the Valley's public landfill is Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar, which charges every load a one-ton minimum.[24],[25] See dumps and landfills near the Valley.

Whether it's a couch on the second floor or a spa at the bottom of a long flight of yard steps, send photos of the item and the path out. We'll look at the carry and text back a price.

Studio City: questions

Can Legacy reach homes up in the Studio City hills?

Yes. When the truck can't get close to the house, we park as near as it's legal and safe and carry items down. The price depends on how far and how steep that carry is, so include photos of the driveway, steps and street with the items themselves. That way the quote you get by text matches the job.

Is Universal City part of Studio City for trash service?

Not necessarily. Universal City is on LA County's list of unincorporated areas, and the County's Board of Supervisors acts as its city council. City of LA programs like LASAN bulky pickup shouldn't be assumed there. Some land that uses the Universal City name falls under City of LA zoning, so check who collects your trash before booking a City pickup.

Does LA Sanitation pick up bulky items in Studio City?

Yes, for City of LA homes it services. Studio City is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, so free curbside bulky pickup is available on your regular trash day if you book at least one business day ahead through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. List every item; crews only take what's on the order.

What happens on Red Flag days in the hills?

On days the LA Fire Department declares a Red Flag warning, parking is banned on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and illegally parked vehicles are towed. Those days average four to seven a year. If your street has Red Flag signs, we'll plan around it or pick another day.

How do I get rid of a hot tub in Studio City?

A spa isn't on LASAN's published list of accepted bulky items, so ask MyLA311 before counting on it; most people hire a hauler. Before removal, the spa has to be drained the right way: LA County advises letting chemicals dissipate, not draining within five days of adding chemicals, and never sending water or filter backwash into the street or storm drain. Our hot tub removal page walks through the rest.

Can you take a couch from an upstairs room in Studio City?

Yes, and it's common. A Studio City customer wrote that their couch was upstairs and through a tight doorway, and the crew still got it out without damage. Tell us the floor and send a photo of the stairs and the tightest turn, and we'll plan for it.

Are there limits on remodel work times in the hills?

In the City's Hillside Construction Regulation districts, construction work is allowed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and only interior work is allowed on Saturdays. Those districts include the Coldwater Canyon and Bowmont Hazen area. Elsewhere in the City, LADBS allows construction Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where's the nearest place to drop off paint or electronics from Studio City?

The East Valley S.A.F.E. Center at 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley is the closest City facility. It's open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., free for LA County residents, and takes paint, chemicals, batteries, bulbs and e-waste. Bring no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.

Which ZIP codes count as Studio City?

The City of LA's ZIP list gives Studio City 91602, 91604, 91607 and 91614. ZIP 91604 is shared with Sherman Oaks and 91602 with North Hollywood and Toluca Lake, because ZIP lines don't follow neighborhood lines. It doesn't change anything for us: all of them are close to our yard.
