West Hills is the corner of the Valley where tract streets give way to the Simi Hills, and it's close to the edge of where our truck runs. Here's what's different about clearing things out here, from the county pockets that use a different trash system to the drop-off sites on the west end.

What jobs look like in West Hills

West Hills is house country. In ZIP 91307, about 90% of housing units are single-family detached homes, and only about 3% sit in buildings with five or more units.[1] The typical house there dates to the mid-1960s,[1] and the neighborhood has one of the lowest population densities in the City of LA.[2]

In practice, that means garages with decades of storage, side yards, sheds and backyard spas rather than apartment move-outs. The one job in our reviews that names West Hills is a spa: Rich M. wrote on Google that the crew "Removed my old spa and left everything clean." If you have a hot tub to go, drain it and cut the power first. LA County asks you to let pool and spa chemicals dissipate, to wait at least five days after adding chemicals before draining, and never to backwash a filter into the street.[3] Storm drains carry that water to creeks and the ocean untreated.[3] More on this in how to get rid of a hot tub in LA and on our hot tub removal page.

The west side of the neighborhood climbs toward Bell Canyon and El Escorpión Park in the Simi Hills, just past Valley Circle Boulevard.[4] Up there, send a photo of the route from the backyard to the street, including steps and gates. That tells us how many people to bring and how long the carry takes.

Local rules that affect your junk

For most addresses, West Hills rules are City of LA rules.[5] The short version:

  • Bulky items are picked up free. LASAN collects furniture, mattresses and other oversized junk at the curb at no charge, with no set limit, for the 1–4 unit homes it services.[6] Book at least one business day before trash day[6] through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489, with an itemized list.[6]
  • Some things stay behind. The curb crew won't take concrete, bricks, dirt, paint, solvents, auto parts, fluorescent tubes or medicine.[6]
  • Metal appliances go free too, on one business day's notice, with refrigerator and freezer doors taken off.[7]
  • Yard waste belongs in the green bin, and extra brush gets one free pickup a year.[8],[9]

Not every West Hills address is in the City. A small unincorporated West Hills area shares the name and the 91307 ZIP,[10],[11] and LA County runs a separate residential franchise area called Chatsworth/Westhills.[12] If a County-contracted company collects your trash, ask that hauler about bulky pickup instead of LASAN.

The full City process is in our LA bulky item pickup guide.

City pickup or a hauler in West Hills

LASAN's free pickup is a good deal when everything fits its rules. Here's how it compares with paying someone:

LASAN bulky pickupPaying a hauler
CostFree for LASAN-serviced homes[6]You pay for the load
WhenYour trash day, booked a business day ahead[6]A day you pick; next-day is typical out here
Who carries itYou get it to the curbThe crew carries it out of the garage or yard
Paint, dirt, remodel debrisRefused at the curb[6]Dirt and remodel debris: ask first. Paint and other hazardous items: not taken; they go to a S.A.F.E. Center
An old spaNot named on LASAN's list, so ask when you book[6]Cut down and hauled

If you can drag it to the curb and wait for trash day, use the City. If it's a garage full, a spa out back, or you're not able to do the carrying, that's when a hauler earns the money.

  • Donations: Goodwill Southern California runs a boutique and donation center at 6415 Platt Ave., West Hills.[13] It takes furniture[14] but not mattresses or major appliances.[14] The Salvation Army lists a store at 21375 Roscoe Blvd. in Canoga Park[15] and offers free pickup booked by ZIP code.[16]
  • Paint, batteries, chemicals, e-waste: the North Valley S.A.F.E. Center, 10241 N. Balboa Blvd., Northridge, Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m.–3 p.m.[17] Up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds a visit.[18]
  • Bulky drop-off and tires: LASAN's West Valley yard at 8840 Vanalden Ave., Northridge, hosts a free Saturday bulky drop-off once a month; the rest of 2026 is Oct 10, Nov 21 and Dec 12.[6] City residents can also leave up to four tires a year there, no rims.[19]
  • Landfill: Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center, 2801 Madera Road,[20] takes trash, C&D debris and green waste but no hazardous waste.[21] Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar charges every load at least one ton.[22] Unincorporated Westhills residents can drop off one bulky item and up to four tires a year there free, plus two free disposal days, with proof of residence.[23]
  • Mattresses: Bye Bye Mattress sites take them at no extra cost,[24] and a store delivering a new one must offer to take the old one.[24]

West Hills: questions

Can you do same-day junk removal in West Hills?

Don't count on it out here. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. West Hills, though, is about 16 miles from our North Hollywood yard, near the far western edge of the Valley, so a next-day or scheduled pickup is the dependable option. Text photos of the job and your ZIP, and we'll reply with a price and the first day we can be there.

Is my West Hills address in the City of LA or in LA County?

Most of West Hills is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, served by LA Sanitation. A small unincorporated West Hills area also exists, and the 91307 ZIP covers both. LA County runs a separate residential trash franchise called Chatsworth/Westhills for those pockets. If a private company under a County contract empties your bins rather than a City truck, City programs like LASAN bulky pickup don't apply to you.

How do I book LA's free bulky item pickup in West Hills?

Book it through the MyLA311 website or app, or call LASAN at 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day before your regular trash day. Have a list of every item ready, because crews collect only what's on the order. The service is free and has no set limit for homes LASAN services, and pickup happens on your trash day.

Can you take out an old hot tub in West Hills?

Yes. A West Hills customer, Rich M., wrote on Google that the crew 'Removed my old spa and left everything clean.' Drain the spa and shut off its power before pickup day. LA County's guidance is to let the chemicals dissipate first and not to drain within five days of adding them, and never to send the water to a storm drain.

Where's the nearest hazardous waste drop-off to West Hills?

The North Valley S.A.F.E. Center at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge, open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It takes paint, chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and electronics free from LA County residents. You can bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip, and staff ask for the address the waste came from.

Where can I donate furniture in West Hills?

Goodwill Southern California has a boutique and donation center at 6415 Platt Ave. in West Hills. Goodwill takes furniture like sofas, tables, chairs and dressers in clean, sellable condition, but it doesn't take mattresses, box springs or major appliances. Call ahead before you load the car, since every donation site has its own limits.

Is there a landfill near West Hills where I can dump a load myself?

Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center at 2801 Madera Road takes household trash, construction debris and green waste, but not hazardous waste. Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar also takes public drop-offs, but it charges every load for at least one ton. Residents of unincorporated Westhills get some free disposal at Sunshine Canyon with proof of residence.

Will LASAN take my yard trimmings and brush?

Regular trimmings go in your green bin, which is required citywide. For a bigger pile, LASAN gives each household it services one free brush pickup a year, booked through MyLA311. Bundles must be tied, no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 30 pounds each. Anything beyond that is a job for a hauler or a drop-off.
