"Junk removal in Los Angeles" covers a huge area, but the rules that matter are simpler than the map suggests. Almost every Valley neighborhood we work in is inside one city with one set of programs. This page explains how those City of LA rules work, where we realistically reach, and when the free option is the better call.

Which neighborhoods are "Los Angeles"

LA County's official list of communities within the City of Los Angeles includes North Hollywood, Valley Village, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake, Van Nuys, Sun Valley, Encino, Tarzana, Reseda, Northridge, Woodland Hills, West Hills, Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Sylmar, Hollywood, the Hollywood Hills and Silver Lake.[1] Every one of them uses LA Sanitation for trash.

Three nearby cities are not part of it. Burbank is its own charter city,[2] Glendale incorporated in 1906,[3] and Pasadena in 1886.[4] Each runs its own trash and bulky pickup, covered in the Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena guides.

Two edge cases trip people up:

  • Universal City is on the County's list of unincorporated areas,[5] and the Board of Supervisors acts as its city council, so City programs like LASAN bulky pickup shouldn't be assumed there.[6] Some land using the Universal City name falls under City zoning, so check the address.[7]
  • Toluca Lake is treated as a City of LA neighborhood in the City's own sources.[8] If your address is actually in Burbank, Burbank's rules apply.

Where we work, honestly

Our yard is on Victory Blvd in North Hollywood. The neighborhoods around it (Valley Village, Toluca Lake, Sun Valley, Studio City, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks) are all roughly two to five miles away in a straight line, and that's where most of our jobs happen and where same-day slots come up most. Hollywood and Silver Lake are about seven to nine miles, over the hill. The West Valley, like Woodland Hills or Chatsworth, is around 14 miles. We still go there, but the drive takes time out of the day, and next-day is the more realistic promise.

The work itself looks similar across the City: apartments with stairs, garages that became storage, furniture that won't fit the elevator, and backyards with a spa nobody uses. Two reviews show the range:

Ricardo was prompt, professional and fast!! I called in the middle of the day and he was out here in less than two hours and took all the damaged furniture and junk left from the bad rains we had. And for the best price!!

Ricardo and Brian did an amazing job helping us out with a difficult removal of a spa from our yard that involved a lot of outdoor stairs. Legacy scheduled us the next morning when they saw we were in need of immediate assistance after another team was unable to complete the job and had to stop half way. Legacy really got us out of a pinch when we needed it most and we are very grateful for them. Thanks very much to all the Legacy team! We will definitely call them again if we need this type of service in the future.

Local rules that affect your junk

These apply to every City of LA address on this page.

Bulky pickup. LA Sanitation picks up bulky items at the curb for free and without a set limit, for homes it services.[9] A bulky item is anything non-hazardous too big for the black bin.[9] Collection is on your trash day, and requests have to be in at least one business day before.[9] MyLA311 takes them by app, online or at 1-800-773-2489, and asks for an itemized list.[9] Full guide: bulky item pickup in Los Angeles.

What the curb won't take. Auto parts and used oil, concrete, bricks and dirt, commercial appliances, paint and chemicals, medicines and needles, fluorescent lights, and loose cardboard are all off the list.[9]

Metal appliances. Fridges, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, AC units and water heaters go out free with a day's notice, fridge doors removed.[10] California requires refrigerant and other special materials to be removed by a certified appliance recycler before an appliance is crushed or disposed of.[11],[12] See refrigerators.

Hazardous waste and e-waste. S.A.F.E. stands for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics, and the centers are free for City and County residents.[13],[14] They take paint, pool chemicals, propane cylinders, batteries, motor oil, fluorescent bulbs and electronics,[13] but not explosives, radioactive material or medical waste.[13] See paint and chemicals.

Mattresses. Bulky pickup takes them,[9] and the state's Bye Bye Mattress program runs free drop-off sites.[15] See mattresses.

Tires. Up to four a year, no rims, free at a LASAN yard with a photo ID and a utility bill.[16] See tires.

Yard waste. Green-bin use is required citywide,[17] with one free brush pickup a year for LASAN households.[18] See yard waste.

Construction and demolition debris. Processing C&D waste unlawfully can cost up to $5,000 per load.[19] Projects covered by the LA Green Building Code must divert at least 65% of their C&D waste.[20],[21] See construction debris.

City pickup or a hauler in Los Angeles

The free City pickup is the best deal in LA when you can wait and can move things yourself. A hauler earns its fee when the items are upstairs or deep in a garage, when a deadline is close, or when the load is a mix the City won't take in one go. The city pickup vs. private hauler guide goes through it case by case.

Why not just leave it on the curb?

Illegal dumping is a real cost in LA. A 2021 City Controller audit found LASAN picked up nearly 16,000 tons of illegally dumped waste in 2019.[22] The same audit listed municipal fines of up to $200 for a first violation and misdemeanor penalties of up to $1,000 and six months in jail.[22] You can report dumping through MyLA311 or at 800-773-2489.[23]

Getting a dumpster in Los Angeles

For temporary no-parking signs, LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division is at (213) 485-2298.[24]

Street logistics matter too. Posted sweeping routes are swept every other week, with tickets.[25] In the hills, posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones become tow-away on Red Flag days.[26] See dumpster rental.

Where things can go in and near Los Angeles

  • S.A.F.E. Centers: East Valley, 11025 Randall St., Sun Valley, and Nicole Bernson, 10241 N. Balboa Blvd., Northridge, both weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[14],[27] Los Angeles–Glendale, 4600 Colorado Blvd., Saturdays only, with a state photo ID required.[28] Limit 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.[13]
  • Bulky drop-off days: free monthly Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at five LASAN yards, including 11050 Pendleton St. in Sun Valley and 8840 Vanalden Ave. in Northridge.[9]
  • Landfill: Sunshine Canyon, 14747 San Fernando Road, Sylmar, takes public loads with a one-ton minimum.[29],[30] Chiquita Canyon has stopped taking waste,[31] and Scholl Canyon is limited to Glendale, Pasadena and a few neighbors.[32]
  • C&D processors: LASAN's certified list includes several in Sun Valley.[33]
  • Donation: Goodwill has stores across the City, from 5855 Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood to 5124 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood.[34],[35] The Salvation Army schedules free pickups at 1-800-SA-TRUCK.[36]

Los Angeles: questions

Does Legacy serve all of Los Angeles?

We serve a lot of it, but not evenly. Our yard is in North Hollywood, and most of our work is in the nearby Valley neighborhoods like Valley Village, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys and Sun Valley. Hollywood, Silver Lake and the far West Valley are longer drives, so same-day is less likely there. Text photos and your ZIP, and we'll tell you straight away whether we can get to you and when.

Does the City of LA pick up large items for free?

Yes. LA Sanitation collects bulky items free, with no set limit, on your regular trash day for homes it services. Book at least one business day ahead through the MyLA311 app, the online form, or 1-800-773-2489, and list every item, because crews take only what's on the work order.

What won't LA Sanitation's bulky pickup take?

It won't take auto parts or used oil, construction materials like concrete, bricks and dirt, commercial appliances, paint, solvents and chemicals, medicines and needles, fluorescent lights, or loose cardboard unless you've booked a Move-In/Move-Out pickup. Hazardous items go to a S.A.F.E. Center instead, and construction debris follows the City's C&D rules.

Where are the S.A.F.E. Centers?

The two in the Valley are the East Valley center at 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley and the Nicole Bernson center at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge, both open weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Los Angeles–Glendale center at 4600 Colorado Blvd. is open Saturdays only and is closest for Silver Lake and Hollywood. All are free for LA County residents.

Is Burbank or Glendale part of the City of LA?

No. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena are separate cities with their own trash service and bulky pickup rules. If you live there, LA Sanitation's programs don't apply; see our Burbank, Glendale or Pasadena pages and their bulky pickup guides.

How much is the fine for illegal dumping in LA?

A 2021 City Controller audit summarized municipal-code fines of up to $200 for a first violation and $250 for a second, and misdemeanor penalties of up to $1,000 and six months in jail, plus cleanup costs. Under state law, first convictions carry a mandatory fine of $250 to $1,000. A free City pickup or a paid haul is cheaper.

Can I drop bulky items off myself instead of waiting for pickup?

Yes. LA Sanitation runs free Saturday bulky-item drop-off events from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at five of its yards, including East Valley in Sun Valley and West Valley in Northridge. The remaining 2026 dates are October 10, November 21 and December 12.

Which landfill takes public loads near the Valley?

Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar takes public drop-offs without an appointment during business hours, with a one-ton minimum charge on every load. Chiquita Canyon in Castaic stopped taking waste on January 1, 2025, Burbank's landfill is closed to the public, and Scholl Canyon in Glendale only takes waste from certain nearby cities.
