How do I get rid of a mattress in the Valley?
Text us a photo of the mattress, box spring and frame, and where they are in the house. We text back a price and a time window, text again before we arrive, and carry everything out of the bedroom. Nothing needs to be dragged to the curb. If you can wait, the city's free bulky pickup takes mattresses too.
What we take
- Mattresses of any size
- Box springs
- Bed frames and headboards
- Futons and daybeds
- Crib and bunk bed mattresses
Ask us first
- We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.
How it works
Most jobs go from first text to swept-up driveway the same way.
How much does mattress removal cost?
Pricing is based on how much truck space your items take up, plus labor. Free photo quotes by text: send photos and get an exact price. Stairs, long carries and heavy material like concrete or dirt change the number. Your quote includes loading, hauling, disposal and sweep-up. The price we quote is the price you pay.
Text us a few photos and your ZIP. You get a price back by text, and that's the number you pay unless what's there is different from what was in the photos.
Fastest quote: text photos of your items to (909) 566-3090.
A mattress is light enough to drag but big enough to jam in a stairwell, and it's one of the few household items California has built a whole recycling program around. That program gives you several free routes. Here's how they compare with having a crew carry it out.
What's included, step by step
- Tell us what's in the bed set. Mattress size, box spring or foundation, and whether a frame, headboard or rails are coming too.
- Price by text. Based on the photo and where the bed sits in the house.
- Strip and fold. If the frame has to be taken down, the crew does it. Queen and king mattresses get folded or tipped on edge to clear corners.
- Carry and load. Everything comes out of the bedroom, down stairs if needed, and onto the truck.
- Clean floor. The spot under the bed is usually the dustiest in the house, so the crew sweeps it.
Before the mattress goes
- Take off sheets, mattress protectors and pillows you want to keep.
- Check under the bed and between the mattress and box spring for anything left behind.
- Loosen or remove the headboard bolts if you know how, or leave it for the crew.
- Bag and tape the mattress if you suspect bed bugs, and tell us when you book.
- Keep a hallway clear from the bedroom door to the exit.
California and LA rules that apply
California's Mattress Stewardship Program covers used mattresses, box springs and futons. CalRecycle oversees it and the Mattress Recycling Council runs it.[1] Here's what it means for you.
Free drop-off. Under the Bye Bye Mattress name, participating sites take old mattresses at no additional cost,[2] no matter their condition or when they were bought.[3] The program covers foam and spring mattresses, futon mattresses that come off the frame, and box springs.[4] It doesn't cover bed frames, crib mattresses, sofa beds, toppers, pillows or air mattresses.[4] Call the site before you drive over, and don't leave anything outside if it's closed.[2]
Retailer take-back. When a new mattress is delivered, the retailer must offer to take back the old one at no additional cost, within 30 days, though delivery or setup fees can still apply.[2] A retailer can refuse a mattress that's contaminated or a health risk.[5]
The fee you already paid. Every new mattress and box spring sold in California carries a recycling fee, $18.00 per unit since April 1, 2026.[3],[6]
Bed bugs and water damage. The free Bye Bye Mattress drop-off turns away mattresses that are wet, heavily soiled or infested with bed bugs.[7]
Bins and alleys. Mattresses don't belong in LA's blue recycling bin or black trash bin.[8],[9] Bye Bye Mattress points out that leaving one in an alley or park is illegal dumping.[2]
What affects the price
- Size and count. A twin by itself is small. A California king with a split box spring is three bulky pieces.
- Frame work. Metal frames unbolt quickly. Storage beds, platform beds with drawers and bunk beds take longer.
- Location in the house. An upstairs bedroom at the end of a narrow hall takes more effort than a ground-floor room by the front door.
- Condition. A soaked mattress is far heavier than a dry one, and an infested one needs wrapping before it moves through the house.
- What else goes. Bedroom furniture removed at the same time, like a dresser or nightstands, is priced on the same truck space.
Free city options vs. paying a hauler
Mattresses are one of the items where the four cities differ most.
| City | Curbside mattress pickup | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | Free for homes LA Sanitation services[10] | Book 1+ business day before trash day[10] |
| Burbank | $12.14 per mattress or box spring[11] | Or drop one set per household at the Recycle Center with no fee[11] |
| Glendale | Free as part of bulky pickup[12] | Only in a mattress bag or safely wrapped[13] |
| Pasadena | Counts toward your two free pickups a year[14] | Book 2 weeks ahead |
In Altadena, each of the four free on-call pickups can include an unlimited number of large items, mattresses included.[15] The city guides for Los Angeles, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena have booking details.
A paid pickup earns its cost when the mattress is upstairs and you can't carry it, when it's infested or wet and won't qualify for free drop-off, when the new one arrives before a city pickup date, or when you're clearing a whole bedroom at once.
Where it goes afterward
Recycling. The state program exists so used mattresses are reused, recycled or disposed of properly.[1] Burbank says the mattresses and box springs from its bulky pickups are recycled rather than landfilled.[11] Retailers that take old mattresses back aren't required to recycle them.[5]
Donation is a long shot. Goodwill Southern California, Habitat LA ReStores, Out of the Closet and Pickup Please all refuse mattresses or box springs.[16],[17],[18],[19] The Salvation Army lists mattresses in its FAQ, but what each location accepts varies.[20]
Bedding has a better shot. Burbank's recycling guide notes that animal shelters often take old bedding in good condition.[21] LA Animal Services lists towels and blankets among the items it always needs.[22] Pasadena Humane's donation bins accept gently used towels and bedding; sheets, pillowcases and pillows are excluded.[23]

Mattress removal: questions
Will you take just one mattress?
Yes. A lone mattress, or a mattress with its box spring, is a routine pickup. Snap a photo showing the bed and the doorway it has to pass through, and the price comes back by text.
Can I drop off a mattress for free somewhere?
Yes. California's Bye Bye Mattress program takes mattresses and box springs at participating drop-off sites at no extra cost, whatever their age or condition. Look up a site with the program's location search and call first, since each site sets its own accepted items. Never leave a mattress outside a closed site.
Will the store take my old mattress when I buy a new one?
It has to offer. California law requires a retailer delivering a new mattress to offer to take back the old one at no extra charge, within 30 days, though delivery or setup fees can still apply. The retailer can refuse a mattress that's contaminated or poses a health risk.
Does the City of LA pick up mattresses?
Yes. Mattresses and box springs are on LA Sanitation's list of free bulky items for homes it services. Book at least one business day before your trash day through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489, and name every item, because crews only take what's on the work order.
What does Burbank charge for mattress pickup?
Since July 1, 2025, Burbank adds a $12.14 Special Handling Fee per mattress or box spring to curbside bulky pickups, billed to the Burbank Water & Power account. Residents can instead drop off one mattress and one box spring per household at the Burbank Recycle Center, Monday through Saturday, without that fee.
Does Glendale take mattresses at the curb?
Yes, but only if each mattress and box spring is in a mattress bag or safely wrapped. Unwrapped mattresses are left behind. Book at least three business days ahead.
Do you take mattresses with bed bugs?
Tell us before we come so the job can be planned. Be aware that wet, heavily soiled or bedbug-infested mattresses don't qualify for free Bye Bye Mattress drop-off, and a retailer can refuse a contaminated mattress, so a paid pickup is often the practical route.
Can I donate a used mattress?
Rarely. Goodwill Southern California, Habitat LA ReStores, Out of the Closet and Pickup Please all say no to mattresses and box springs. The Salvation Army's FAQ lists mattresses among accepted furniture, but it says acceptance varies by location, so call 1-800-SA-TRUCK before counting on it.
Will you take the bed frame and headboard too?
Yes. Include the frame, headboard and any rails in your photo so they're priced together. Note that the free mattress program doesn't cover bed frames, so a frame needs a different route if you're dropping off yourself.
Why did I pay a mattress fee when I bought a new one?
California collects a recycling fee on every new mattress and box spring sold, whether or not you recycle an old one. On units sold from April 1, 2026 it's $18.00 each. That fee funds the free drop-off network.
Can I put a mattress in the blue bin or trash bin?
No. LA Sanitation says mattresses stay out of the blue recycling bin and the black trash bin; they go through bulky pickup. Leaving one in an alley or park is illegal dumping.
How soon can you pick up a mattress?
Usually, yes. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. A mattress and box spring are quick to load, so they often fit into an opening the same afternoon if you text a photo early in the day.
