Sun Valley is the next neighborhood over from our North Hollywood base, and it's also where a lot of the Valley's recycling and disposal happens. That makes it a useful place to know what's free, what's nearby and what needs a hauler.

What jobs look like in Sun Valley

Sun Valley is house country by LA standards. In ZIP 91352, about 61% of housing units are single-family detached homes and about 27% are in buildings of five or more units,[1] and about half of households rent.[1] The median home there was built in 1961.[1]

Sun Valley sits under the Shadow Hills, just north of the Burbank airport.[2] Jobs here tend to be at houses rather than apartment towers, which shapes how we plan them:

  • Garages and side yards. Tell us whether the truck can back into the driveway and whether anything is behind a gate.
  • Yard and outdoor junk. Old patio furniture, playsets and branch piles are typical backyard junk. Branches and trimmings can go in the green bin,[3] which every City of LA resident must use for yard and food waste.[3]
  • Heavy material. Dirt, broken concrete and tile are common from DIY projects, and LA Sanitation won't take them at the curb.[4] Weight matters more than volume on those loads, so a photo with something for scale helps. Our concrete and dirt guide covers the options.
  • Street sweeping. Posted routes are swept every other week, and cars left there are cited,[5] so we work around the sign.

Check the ZIP first. The County lists 91352 as Sun Valley but 91504 as shared between Sun Valley and the City of Burbank,[6] and Burbank runs its own trash service with its own fees. If a Burbank truck empties your carts, the Burbank page is the one you want.

Local rules that affect your junk

Bulky pickup. LA Sanitation takes bulky items free and without a stated limit for the homes it services,[4] on your regular trash day, booked at least one business day ahead.[4] Details are in the LA bulky pickup guide.

Appliances. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters and AC units are free metal-appliance pickups for LA Sanitation curbside homes, and fridge doors come off first.[7]

Brush. Beyond the green bin, LA Sanitation homes get one free brush pickup a year, in tied bundles no longer than 4 feet or heavier than 30 lb.[8]

Paint and chemicals go to a S.A.F.E. Center, and there's one right in Sun Valley (see below). Even dried paint can't go in California trash.[9] See paint and chemical disposal.

Tires. LA residents can take 4 a year to a LA Sanitation yard for free.[10] More in tire disposal.

Remodel debris. Processing C&D debris unlawfully carries penalties up to $5,000 per load.[11] See construction debris disposal.

Living this close to so many drop-off sites makes doing it yourself realistic here, if you have a truck and a free weekend. A hauler makes sense when the load is heavy, when it's a mix of things that would take three separate stops, or when you just want it gone today.
