Glendale splits trash service two ways: the City for smaller homes, private haulers for everyone else. Which side you're on decides how you book a pickup, how often it's free and who you call. This page lays that out, plus the drop-off sites.
What jobs look like in Glendale
Glendale is mostly apartments. About 53% of its housing units are in buildings with five or more units and only about a third are detached houses,[1] and roughly 65% of households rent.[1] The median building dates to 1966.[1]
That means plenty of Glendale junk sits inside multi-story buildings: carrying a sofa down a stairwell, clearing a unit after a move, or emptying a relative's apartment. It helps to tell us the floor, whether there's an elevator you can reserve, and whether the building has a loading spot. Sweeping rules apply by the sign even after the sweeper has gone by,[2] so we plan the truck around the posted hours.
Some jobs are harder than a single couch. One customer wrote about their mother's apartment:
Contacted Legacy Junk Removal to clean out my elderly mother's apartment (hoarder situation) in Glendale, CA. They arrived on time and was finished within 2 1/2 hours. They did an extraordinary and thorough job! Highly recommend!
The other side of Glendale is the older houses in historic districts such as Rossmoyne, Brockmont Park and Casa Verdugo,[3] and residential neighborhoods like Adams Hill and Pacific Edison in the south.[4] Those jobs tend to be garages, side yards and whole-house cleanouts.
Local rules that affect your junk
Bulky pickup (1–4 units). Ask at least 3 business days ahead using the City's form or the Recycle Coach app,[5] with day-by-day cutoffs on the City's list (Wednesday for a Monday pickup, and so on).[6] Items go to the curb after 6 p.m. the evening before.[5] Only items on the City's list are taken.[6] Our Glendale bulky pickup guide goes item by item.
Bulky pickup (5+ units). Properties with a private hauler get up to four free appointments a year, each capped at 4 items or 10 bundles of green waste.[7] In a large building those four slots are shared by every tenant.
Mattresses and box springs must be bagged or safely wrapped, or the crew leaves them.[8] Glass items such as mirrors must be wrapped too.[5]
Appliances and refrigerant. The City describes appliance pickup as free for residents.[5] AC units go out as bulky items; the hazardous waste facility takes the Freon itself, in bottles up to 5 gallons, but not the units.[9]
E-waste goes to the Recycling Center, not the hazardous waste facility.[10] See TV and electronics disposal.
Paint, chemicals and motor oil go to the Fire Department's facility on Flower St.[10] Used motor oil also gets a free monthly home pickup, up to 10 gallons, on the second Thursday.[11] Details in paint and chemical disposal.
Tires aren't taken at the hazardous waste facility[10] or the Recycling Center.[12] California bans them from the trash,[13] and CalRecycle has a tire recycler search.[14]
Yard waste belongs in the 96-gallon organics cart,[15] which also takes food scraps in a clear bag.[9]
Remodel debris isn't bulky waste.[6] Covered projects pay a $50 fee and file a recycling plan before work starts,[16] and all trees, stumps and rocks from land clearing must be reused or recycled.[16]
City pickup or a hauler in Glendale
| City or private-hauler bulky pickup | Private junk hauler | |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | 3 business days (City) | Same-day and next-morning pickups most days |
| Limits | City list only; 4 items per appointment in 5+ unit buildings | Whatever fits the job |
| Prep | Bag mattresses, wrap glass, carry to the curb | Crew carries from inside |
| Leftovers | Items left out without a booking can be fined | No curb set-out needed |
City column sources: lead time,[5] limits,[6],[7] prep,[5],[8] curb fines.[17]
Use the City if you're in a house or small building, the pieces are on the list, and you can get them to the curb. Call a hauler when you're on an upper floor, your building's four appointments are used up, the items aren't on the list, or you need the unit empty before a lease ends. Leaving things out without a booking can be treated as illegal dumping.[17]
Getting a dumpster in Glendale
For a remodel, the bin is only half of it. Glendale's Diversion Security Deposit is 2% of valuation for single-family construction or additions and 6% for demolition, up to $30,000.[16] You get it back by diverting 65% of the debris through a certified facility and turning in the original tags within 6 months of occupancy.[16] Glendale estimates 40 lb of debris per square foot for a typical demolition.[18]
Where things can go near Glendale
- Household hazardous waste: 780 Flower St., Wednesdays and the second Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[10] Staff unload your car, and the limit is 15 gallons or 125 lb.[10] Questions go to (818) 548-4810.[5]
- Glendale Recycling Center, 540 W. Chevy Chase Dr., weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.[5] It takes computers, TVs, phones, small appliances, batteries and cords.[5] On the City's older table, printers, microwaves and similar items were in the "for a fee" column.[12]
- Los Angeles–Glendale S.A.F.E. Center, 4600 Colorado Blvd. in Los Angeles, is open Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to any County resident.[19]
- Donations: Goodwill Southern California at 240 N. Brand Blvd.[20] and its Montrose donation center at 2064 Verdugo Rd.,[21] and a Salvation Army thrift store at 333 N. Central Ave.[22]
- Scholl Canyon Landfill sits just north of the 134 and is run by the County Sanitation Districts.[23] A Glendale ordinance limits it to waste from Glendale and a short list of nearby cities and communities; Burbank and City of LA waste isn't on it.[23] It's open weekdays 8 to 5 and Saturdays 8 to 3:30,[23] and charges $85.91 a ton for general waste with a 1-ton minimum.[24] Burnt debris isn't accepted.[25]

Glendale: questions
How do I book a bulky item pickup in Glendale?
If you live in a house or a building of 1 to 4 units, the City handles it. Request it through the City's online form or the Recycle Coach app at least 3 business days ahead. For a Monday pickup, that means asking by the Wednesday before. Put items at the curb after 6 p.m. the evening before, fully off your property.
I rent in a big Glendale apartment building. Who picks up my couch?
Buildings with 5 or more units are served by one of Glendale's four private haulers, not the City. Those properties get up to 4 free bulky appointments a year per property, each limited to 4 items, booked through the hauler. Ask your manager which hauler serves the building and whether any appointments are left.
Will Glendale pick up a mattress?
Yes, but only if it's in a mattress bag or safely wrapped. The same goes for box springs. The City's Recycling Center on Chevy Chase doesn't take mattresses, so curbside pickup, a retailer take-back when you buy new, or a Bye Bye Mattress drop-off site are the usual routes.
What won't Glendale's bulky pickup take?
Anything not on the City's list. That includes construction materials, lumber, large amounts of glass, bags of trash, cardboard and hazardous waste. Mirrors and glass cabinet doors must be wrapped, and BBQ or patio-heater propane tanks aren't accepted. Carpet has to be rolled and tied, no longer than 5 feet.
Where do I take old paint in Glendale?
To the Glendale Fire Department's household hazardous waste facility at 780 Flower St. It's open every Wednesday and the second Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for Glendale and La Cañada residents with proof of residency. Each visit is limited to 15 gallons of liquid or 125 lb of solids.
Where do TVs and computers go in Glendale?
The Glendale Recycling Center at 540 W. Chevy Chase Dr. takes e-waste, including TVs, monitors, computers and phones. Some smaller electronics such as printers and microwaves may carry a fee. The hazardous waste facility on Flower St. does not take e-waste.
Can I take my junk to Scholl Canyon Landfill?
Only if the waste comes from Glendale or one of the other areas in its wasteshed, such as Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta or Montrose. Burbank and City of Los Angeles waste isn't allowed. Scholl Canyon charges by the ton with a 1-ton minimum, and it refuses burnt debris.
Is it illegal to leave furniture on the curb in Glendale?
It can be. Glendale treats bulky items left on the curb, street or property without arranged disposal as illegal dumping, and it can fine for it. Book the City pickup, your building's hauler, or a private hauler before anything goes out.
Do I need a deposit for remodel debris in Glendale?
For covered projects, yes. New buildings and residential additions or alterations that add conditioned space pay a $50 plan fee and post a security deposit, 2% of valuation for single-family work. The deposit comes back once you show 65% of the debris went to a certified recycler.
Is La Crescenta or Montrose part of Glendale?
Not all of it. La Crescenta and Montrose are unincorporated county communities, though ZIPs 91020 and 91214 are shared with the City of Glendale. Check your trash bill to see who collects. Residents with a Glendale Water and Power bill can use Glendale's hazardous waste facility.
