What jobs look like in North Hollywood
Most people in North Hollywood rent. In ZIP 91601, around the Arts District and the south end of the neighborhood, about 83% of occupied homes are renter-occupied, and about 70% of housing units are in buildings with five or more units.[1] Farther north the mix shifts. In 91605 about 44% of units are detached houses, and the median home there was built in 1964.[2] City Planning describes the whole area as a blend of single-family and multi-family housing, with an industrial core in the north along the Metrolink tracks.[3]
So a typical NoHo job falls into one of three shapes:
- Apartment move-outs and single pieces. A sofa on the third floor, a bed frame left for the next tenant, a unit that has to be empty before inspection. What matters is the floor, the elevator (or lack of one) and where the truck can stop. Send those details with your photos and we'll plan the carry.
- Older houses with a garage full of years. In 91606, where our yard is, the median home was built in 1962.[4] Decades in one house add up, and those jobs start with sorting out what can still be donated before we load the rest.
- Small businesses and studios. The NoHo Arts District has theaters, galleries, dance studios and cafes.[5] LASAN's bulky pickup is set up for the homes it services,[6] so a studio or office clear-out usually needs another route. See commercial junk removal.
Speed is the other thing that stands out here. One customer wrote that they needed "a loveseat and ottoman in North Hollywood" removed, and that the crew "had a slot open the following morning" (Undine S., Google). Another said the job was done "within an hour of reaching out to them. This was in North Hollywood." (Mark K., Google). That isn't something we can promise every day, but being a couple of miles away helps.
Local rules that affect your junk
North Hollywood is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, not its own city,[7] so LA Sanitation (LASAN) runs trash and bulky pickup. The key rules:
- Bulky items. LASAN collects bulky items free, with no set limit, on your normal trash day for homes it services. Book at least one business day ahead through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489.[6] The crew picks up only the items listed on the work order, so name every piece.[8] Full walkthrough: bulky item pickup in Los Angeles.
- Move-out boxes. Renters can book a separate Move-In/Move-Out extra pickup for boxes and bags, one business day ahead. Each piece has to be under 30 lb and flattened cardboard must be tied.[9] See the moving-out checklist.
- Mattresses. LASAN lists mattresses and box springs among accepted bulky items.[6] You can also drop one off free at a Bye Bye Mattress site.[10] More in how to get rid of a mattress.
- Fridges, washers and water heaters. LASAN picks up large metal appliances for free with one business day's notice, and fridge and freezer doors must come off first.[8] Refrigerant has to be removed by a certified recycler or an EPA-certified technician before an appliance is scrapped.[11],[12] See how to get rid of a refrigerator.
- Paint, batteries and chemicals. None of these go at the curb.[6] They go to a S.A.F.E. Center, and even dried paint can't go in the trash in California.[13],[14] See paint and chemicals.
- Tires. City residents can drop off up to four tires a year, rims off, at a LASAN yard for free.[15] See tires.
- Remodel debris. Concrete, brick and dirt aren't bulky items.[6] See construction debris.
Cross into Burbank and the rules change. Burbank is its own city with its own trash service,[16],[17] and North Hollywood's plan area stops at the Burbank line on the east.[3] If your home is on the Burbank side, read bulky item pickup in Burbank instead.
City pickup or a hauler in North Hollywood
| LASAN bulky pickup | Hiring a hauler | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free for homes LASAN services | Paid, quoted from photos |
| Lead time | Book 1+ business day before your trash day | Same-day and next-morning pickups most days |
| Who carries it | You, to the curb | The crew, from wherever it sits |
| What's taken | Listed bulky items and metal appliances | Mixed loads, boxes, garage piles |
| Won't take | Paint, chemicals, construction debris, auto parts, loose cardboard | Hazardous waste (goes to S.A.F.E.) |
For a single couch in a house with a driveway, the City pickup is hard to beat. If you're on an upper floor with a move-out date on Friday, or the pile is half boxes and half furniture, a hauler saves you the stairs and the wait. And if your building has five or more units, check with management first, since the City's bulky pages are written for homes with 1 to 4 units.[6]
Getting a dumpster in North Hollywood
For temporary no-parking signs, LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division is at (213) 485-2298.[18]
On a private driveway, we haven't found an official City page that spells out the rules, so ask when you book. Sizes and how bin rental works are on our dumpster rental page, and dumpster rental vs. junk removal helps if you're not sure which fits.
Where things can go near North Hollywood
Donation first, if things are in good shape:
- Goodwill Southern California, 5855 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood.[19] It takes furniture in sellable condition but not mattresses or major appliances.[20]
- Out of the Closet, 6241 Laurel Canyon Blvd.[21] It won't take mattresses, bed frames or bedding.[22]
- Hope the Mission Thrift, 10955 Magnolia Blvd.[23]
For hazardous items, the East Valley S.A.F.E. Center at 11025 Randall Street, Sun Valley, is open Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[24] You stay in the car while staff unload, and the limit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.[13]
Cans and bottles can go to CRV recycling centers in the neighborhood, including A & H Recycling at 6140 Lankershim Blvd. and Green Earth Recycling at 7355 Lankershim Blvd.[25] For scrap metal and large appliances, SA Recycling runs a yard at 8250 Tujunga Ave. in Sun Valley.[26] The City also holds free Saturday bulky drop-off days at its East Valley yard, 11050 Pendleton St.[6] More options are in where to donate in the San Fernando Valley and dumps and landfills near the Valley.
If the City pickup doesn't fit your timing or your stairs, send us photos of the pile and tell us the cross street. We're the closest crew you'll find, and we'll text back a number.

Reviews from North Hollywood
I had a great experience with Legacy! I submitted a form online to remove a loveseat and ottoman in North Hollywood, and Ricardo got back to me right away. He gave me a quote and said they had a slot open the following morning. Carlos and Brian came at the top of the hour and they had my furniture removed within five minutes. They were very professional and friendly. I shopped around to compare prices and Legacy was the most reasonable option. Glad I chose them and I would highly recommend!
Brian was the best. The service was super friendly, price was great and they did it within an hour of reaching out to them. This was in North Hollywood. Will 1000% use them whenever i need something removed in the future

North Hollywood: questions
How close is Legacy to North Hollywood?
We're in it. Our yard is at 10822 Victory Blvd in ZIP 91606, so most NoHo addresses are a couple of miles away or less. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. That short drive means same-day openings come up here more often than in the rest of the Valley. Text photos early in the day for the best chance at a same-day slot.
Does the City pick up furniture for free in North Hollywood?
Yes, for homes LA Sanitation services. North Hollywood is part of the City of Los Angeles, so LASAN collects bulky items like couches, mattresses and dressers at the curb on your regular trash day at no charge. You have to book at least one business day ahead through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489 and list every item. The crew only takes what's on the work order.
I rent an apartment in NoHo. Can I use the City's bulky pickup?
It depends on who collects your building's trash. LASAN's bulky pickup is for homes it services, and its residential pages describe homes with 1 to 4 units. Larger complexes often use a private hauler, so ask your manager or landlord what the building offers. If the answer is nothing, or the move-out date is close, a hauler can carry things down and take them the same visit.
Will LASAN take the moving boxes from my move?
Only through a separate Move-In/Move-Out extra pickup that you book at least one business day ahead. Bags, boxes and bundles each have to stay under 30 pounds and about 2 by 3 feet, and cardboard must be flattened and tied. Loose cardboard isn't taken at the curb otherwise.
Where do I take paint and batteries from a North Hollywood home?
The closest City drop-off is the East Valley S.A.F.E. Center at 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley, open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's free for LA County residents and takes paint, batteries, chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and electronics, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds a visit. Unopened or leftover house paint can also go to a PaintCare drop-off site.
Is West Toluca Lake served by LA Sanitation?
Toluca Lake is treated as a City of LA neighborhood in the City's own sources, and West Toluca Lake sits within North Hollywood, so the City's programs apply there. If your address is east of the City line in Burbank, Burbank's rules apply instead. Check your trash bill if you're unsure who collects it.
Can you pick up just one couch in North Hollywood?
Yes. Single pieces like a loveseat, recliner or mattress are some of our most common NoHo jobs. Send a photo and tell us what floor it's on, and we'll quote it by text. If you can wait a few days and can get it to the curb yourself, the City's free pickup is worth using instead.
What if my building has no parking for a truck?
Tell us when you send photos. Posted street-sweeping routes in LA are swept every other week and parked cars get cited, so we pick a loading spot around that.
Can I leave old tires out with bulky pickup?
No. Tires are banned from the trash in California. City of LA residents can drop off up to four tires a year, without rims, at a LASAN yard for free. The East Valley yard is on Pendleton Street in Sun Valley and takes tires weekdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a photo ID and a utility bill.
Is Magnolia Park part of North Hollywood?
No. Magnolia Park is a business district in the City of Burbank, just east of North Hollywood. Burbank runs its own trash and bulky pickup with different rules and fees, so check our Burbank page if your home is on that side of the line.
