Valley Village is the neighborhood right next to our yard, so the drive is short and the scheduling is easier than almost anywhere else. Here's what hauling looks like on these streets, which City rules apply, and where things can go besides a landfill.

What jobs look like in Valley Village

Valley Village has a longer history as its own place than people expect. It was founded in 1939,[1] and the local council office describes it by its early ranch-style architecture.[1] City Planning says most of the community is single-family homes, with commercial buildings mainly along Laurel Canyon Boulevard.[2]

The ZIP numbers tell a second story, though. ZIP 91607, which Valley Village shares with parts of North Hollywood and Sherman Oaks,[3] is about 70% renter-occupied, and about 63% of its housing units are in buildings with five or more units.[4] The median building there dates from 1969.[4]

That mix shapes the work:

  • Long-held furniture from houses. Sofas, dining sets and dressers that have been in one living room for decades are heavy and often don't come apart. We bring the right number of people and check doorways before we lift.
  • Apartment units. Tell us the floor, whether there's an elevator, and where a truck can stop. Those three answers set the price more than the item does.
  • Garages and back rooms. When a garage has quietly turned into storage, we can work through it with you and set aside anything worth donating before the rest goes on the truck.

Jill G. put it this way on Google: "I chose Legacy Junk Removal for their commitment to donation and recycling." Her crew "removed the sofa and loveseat cleanly and easily, making room for something newer thank 40 years.." That's a very Valley Village job: one household, one set of furniture, a long time in place.

Local rules that affect your junk

Because Valley Village is part of the City of Los Angeles,[5] LA Sanitation sets the rules for what goes out and how.

Bulky pickup is free but needs a request. LASAN takes bulky items at the curb at no charge for homes it services,[6] and defines a bulky item as anything non-hazardous that's too big for the black bin.[6] Pickup happens on your regular trash day, and you have to schedule at least one business day before it.[6] The step-by-step is in our LA bulky item guide.

Appliances go out free too, with prep. Fridges, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, AC units and water heaters are collected free for LASAN homes. Remove fridge and freezer doors before pickup.[7] Refrigerant removal is regulated in California: only a certified appliance recycler, or an EPA-certified technician for refrigerant, may do it.[8] Details in how to get rid of a washer and dryer.

Yard waste stays in the green system. Green-bin use is required for every City resident,[9] and households LASAN services get one free brush pickup a year in tied bundles up to 4 ft and 30 lb.[10] Bigger jobs are covered in yard waste.

Mattresses have two free routes. LASAN's bulky pickup takes them,[6] and Bye Bye Mattress drop-off sites take them at no extra cost regardless of condition.[11],[12] See mattress disposal.

Hazardous items skip the curb entirely. Paint, solvents, medicines, fluorescent tubes and auto fluids aren't bulky items,[6] and all batteries are banned from every household bin in California.[13] Those go to a S.A.F.E. Center; see paint and chemicals.

Remodel waste. Read construction debris before a kitchen or bath job.

Use the City when the item is already in the garage or driveway and your trash day is a few days off. Call a hauler when the piece is upstairs, when there's a whole room of it, or when a move-out, a new-furniture delivery or a listing date won't wait for trash day.

Getting a dumpster in Valley Village

If your house has a driveway, that's usually the easiest spot for a bin.

Bin sizes and how rental works are on the dumpster rental page.

Where things can go near Valley Village

For furniture in good shape, these are the closest donation options:

  • Goodwill Southern California, 5855 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood 91601.[14] It won't repair or reupholster, so items need to be clean and sellable.[15]
  • The Salvation Army schedules free furniture pickups by ZIP code or at 1-800-SA-TRUCK. What it accepts varies by location.[16]
  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater LA ReStores take working appliances under 8 years old and furniture with nothing broken or missing, but not mattresses.[17] Drop-off is free; a pickup costs $50.[17]
  • LA Animal Services lists towels and blankets among the items it always needs.[18]

Hazardous waste and e-waste go to the East Valley S.A.F.E. Center, 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley, open weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[19] Any LA County resident can use it for free.[20] Up to four tires a year go free to a LASAN yard, including the East Valley yard in Sun Valley.[21] For everything else, see where to donate in the San Fernando Valley.

If the couch is too heavy, the stairs too narrow, or trash day too far off, send us a couple of photos and your cross street. We're a few minutes up the road and will reply with a price.

Valley Village: questions

Is Valley Village its own city?

No. Valley Village is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, recognized as its own community after residents petitioned the City Council. For trash and junk, that means LA Sanitation's programs and the City's rules apply, the same as in North Hollywood and Studio City.

How do I get a free couch pickup in Valley Village?

Request a bulky item pickup from LA Sanitation through the MyLA311 app, the online form, or 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day before your trash day. List the couch and anything else going out, because the crew only takes what's on the order. It's free for homes LASAN services. If you can't get the couch to the curb, that's when a hauler helps.

Can I donate a sofa instead of throwing it out?

Often, if it's clean and unbroken. Goodwill Southern California takes furniture in sellable condition at its Lankershim Blvd. store in North Hollywood. The Salvation Army offers free donation pickup booked by ZIP code, and Habitat for Humanity's LA ReStores take furniture with no broken or missing pieces. Stained, torn or broken pieces are usually turned away.

What do I do with an old refrigerator in Valley Village?

LA Sanitation picks up fridges, freezers, washers, dryers and water heaters free for homes it services. Book at least one business day before trash day and take the fridge or freezer doors off first. If you'd rather not move it to the curb, a hauler can take it from the kitchen or garage.

Where does leftover paint go?

Not in any bin. Paint, stains and solvents go to a S.A.F.E. Center; the nearest is on Randall Street in Sun Valley, open weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sealed, labeled house paint in cans of 5 gallons or less can also go to a free PaintCare drop-off site. Dried paint still counts, so don't bin it.

Can I put tree trimmings out with bulky pickup?

No. Yard trimmings belong in your green bin, which every City of LA resident is required to use for green waste. For more than fits, LASAN gives each household it services one free brush pickup a year, in tied bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 30 pounds.

How fast can Legacy get to Valley Village?

It's one of the shortest drives we make, a little over two miles from our yard. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. It helps to send photos early in the day. We'll tell you honestly by text whether we can make it today.

What happens to my furniture after Legacy picks it up?

Tell us before we load if donation matters to you, and we'll be straight about whether a piece is likely to be accepted. One Valley Village customer picked us for exactly that reason. If a piece won't be accepted anywhere, we'll say so before it goes on the truck.
