Sherman Oaks is farther from our yard than North Hollywood, Valley Village or Studio City, about five miles in a straight line, and its housing leans harder toward larger buildings. Here's how that plays out on a haul, and which City rules and drop-off options apply.
What jobs look like in Sherman Oaks
The Neighborhood Council's map runs from Mulholland Drive on the south to Burbank Boulevard on the north, with the 405 on the west and Coldwater Canyon Boulevard on the east.[1] Inside that, City Planning describes single-family and multi-family neighborhoods, with regional commercial along Ventura and Sepulveda.[2] The council district office adds that Sherman Oaks takes in "a wide swath" of the Santa Monica Mountains.[3]
Multi-unit living dominates the numbers. In ZIP 91423, about 61% of housing units are in buildings with five or more units and about 63% of homes are rented.[4] In 91403, which Sherman Oaks shares with Encino, it's about 59% in larger buildings and 55% rented.[5] Median build years are 1966 and 1971.[4],[5]
What that means for a Sherman Oaks job:
- Condo and apartment move-outs. Most of the work is getting furniture from a unit to the truck: the elevator, a loading area, any HOA rules about move times. Ask your building about those before we come, and tell us what they say.
- Sectionals and big upholstered pieces. They're heavy, awkward in hallways, and sometimes have to come apart to fit an elevator. Kathy R. wrote on Google about a job "in Sherman Oaks" where "they were even able to accommodate same-day service" and "removed a sectional in about two minutes."
- Houses on the hill side. South toward Mulholland, streets are the constraint. We park legally and carry, and photos of the approach help us bring enough people.
Local rules that affect your junk
Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, not a separate city,[6] so LA Sanitation's programs are the ones that count.
Free bulky pickup, with a catch for big buildings. LASAN collects bulky items at no charge on trash day for homes it services, and its single-family pages describe homes with 1 to 4 units.[7] If you live in a larger condo or apartment building, your HOA or manager decides how bulky items leave. For houses, request pickup by MyLA311 app, web form or 1-800-773-2489, with an itemized list.[7] The crew takes only what's written on the work order.[8] See bulky item pickup in LA.
Moving boxes need their own request. LASAN's Move-In/Move-Out pickup takes boxes and bags on trash day if you call a business day ahead; flattened cardboard has to be tied, and each piece stays under 30 lb.[9] The moving-out checklist covers the rest.
Appliances and refrigerant. LASAN takes metal appliances free for serviced homes, fridge doors removed,[8] but not commercial appliances.[7] A certified recycler or EPA-certified tech must pull refrigerant before a fridge or AC unit is scrapped.[10],[11]
Mattresses. California requires retailers to offer to take back your old mattress free when they deliver a new one, within 30 days.[12] Otherwise, bulky pickup or a Bye Bye Mattress drop-off site both work.[7],[12] See mattress disposal.
Batteries, paint and e-waste. All batteries, including e-bike and scooter batteries, stay out of every household bin and go to a S.A.F.E. Center.[13] So does paint.[13] See paint and chemicals and TVs and electronics.
Remodels. Processing C&D debris unlawfully carries penalties of up to $5,000 per load.[14] See construction debris.
City pickup or a hauler in Sherman Oaks
| LASAN bulky pickup | A hauler like Legacy | |
|---|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Homes LASAN services (1–4 unit pages) | Anyone: house, condo, office |
| Cost | Free | Quoted from photos |
| Timing | Next trash day, booked a business day ahead | Same-day and next-morning pickups most days |
| Carrying | You bring it to the curb | Crew carries from the unit or the hillside yard |
| Boxes and bags | Only via a separate Move-In/Move-Out request | Loaded with everything else |
If you're in a house on a flat street and can wait for trash day, the City pickup costs nothing. If you're on the fourth floor of a building with its own rules, or the realtor needs the place empty before photos, a hauler is usually the practical choice. The realtor pre-listing guide has more on that last case.
Getting a dumpster in Sherman Oaks
Two Sherman Oaks specifics to keep in mind: street-sweeping routes are posted and swept every other week, with citations for cars in the way,[15] and a condo building may have its own rules about bins in a shared driveway, so check with the HOA. For sizes and scheduling, see dumpster rental.

Sherman Oaks: questions
Do you do same-day junk removal in Sherman Oaks?
Usually. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Sherman Oaks is about five miles from our North Hollywood yard, so today's slot depends on what's already booked. A Sherman Oaks customer on Google said we were able to fit in same-day service for a sectional. The best chance is to text photos early in the day.
What are the boundaries of Sherman Oaks?
The Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council covers the area from Mulholland Drive north to Burbank Boulevard, and from the 405 freeway east to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. ZIP codes spill past those lines: 91403 is shared with Encino, 91401 and 91411 with Van Nuys, and 91604 with Studio City.
Does the City's free bulky pickup cover my condo building?
It depends on who collects the building's trash. LA Sanitation's bulky pickup is for homes it services, and its residential pages describe homes with 1 to 4 units. Many Sherman Oaks condo and apartment buildings are larger than that, so ask your HOA or property manager how bulky items are handled before you drag anything to the curb.
Will a donation truck come up to my condo?
Usually not. Habitat for Humanity's LA pickups need items on a ground floor, in a garage or carport, or at the curb, and St. Vincent de Paul's crews don't enter homes and need items outside at street level. If the furniture is upstairs, you'll need to bring it down or have a hauler carry it.
Where can I drop off donations in Sherman Oaks?
Goodwill Southern California has a store at 14760 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. It takes clean, sellable furniture and household goods, plus e-waste in any condition, but not mattresses or major appliances. The Salvation Army has a thrift store nearby at 16934 Ventura Blvd. in Encino.
Where do I take household chemicals from Sherman Oaks?
Two City S.A.F.E. Centers are within reach: Randall Street in Sun Valley and the Nicole Bernson center on Balboa Blvd. in Northridge. Both are open Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and both are free for LA County residents. Bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.
Can the City take my old washer and dryer?
Yes, if LASAN services your home. Its metal appliance pickup takes washers, dryers, fridges, freezers, dishwashers, AC units and water heaters for free with one business day's notice before trash day. Remove fridge and freezer doors first. Commercial appliances aren't accepted at the curb.
My hillside street is narrow. Can you still get there?
Usually. Sherman Oaks runs up into the Santa Monica Mountains to Mulholland, and on tight streets we park where it's legal and carry. Send photos of the street and driveway with your items so the quote accounts for the walk. On LAFD Red Flag days, posted streets in high fire hazard zones become tow-away, so we'd reschedule if your street is posted.
Where are the nearest free tire and bulky drop-offs?
LA Sanitation's West Valley yard at 8840 Vanalden Ave. in Northridge and East Valley yard in Sun Valley both take up to four tires a year from City residents, weekdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The same yards host free monthly Saturday bulky-item drop-off events.
