How do I get rid of remodel debris?

Two ways. If the debris is already piled up, text us photos and we'll load and haul it in one visit. If the work is still going, rent one of our dumpsters and fill it as you go. Heavy material like concrete, dirt and tile is priced differently than bulky debris, so mention it when you send photos.

What we take

  • Drywall and plaster
  • Lumber, framing and old decking
  • Tile, flooring and carpet
  • Glass, windows and doors
  • Cabinets and countertops
  • Roofing debris
  • Fencing

Ask us first

  • Concrete, dirt and rock: tell us the amount; heavy loads are priced differently.
  • We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.

Always included

Loading, hauling, disposal and sweep-up are included.

How it works

Most jobs go from first text to swept-up driveway the same way.

  1. Send photos

Text a few photos and your ZIP, or use the quote form. Wide shots of the pile or room work best.

“Sent them a pic and they sent a quote with a range low to high…” Tim S.

  2. Get a price by text

We text back a price based on truck space and labor.

“Got a call back from Ricardo immediately after placing online request.” Stacy O.

  3. Pick a time

Same-day and next-morning pickups most days. We give you a window and text before we arrive.

“They gave me a 2 hr service window and texted me 20 min before their arrival.” Janet S.

  4. We haul it and sweep up

We carry everything out from wherever it sits, load the truck, and sweep up before we leave.

“took everything, broke down old play equipment, and even swept up.” Michelle M.

How much does construction debris removal cost?

Debris is priced by truck space and labor, and heavy material like concrete, dirt and tile can change the price. Text us a few photos and your ZIP. You get a price back by text, and that's the number you pay unless what's there is different from what was in the photos.

Remodel debris runs on different rules from household junk. Curbside programs won't take it. Here's how a debris pickup works.

What's included, step by step

  1. Photos of the pile. Include something for scale and call out any heavy material (concrete, tile, dirt, plaster) and anything sharp, like glass or nail-studded lumber.
  2. A text-back price. Bulky debris is priced on truck space; heavy material changes the number.
  3. Loading. The crew carries debris from the room, yard or driveway, breaks down long pieces, and loads it.
  4. Sweep-up. The work area is swept so you can get back to the job or hand the house back.

After a finished remodel, speed is usually what people notice:

Before pickup

  • Separate paint, solvents, adhesives and chemical cans from the debris.
  • Set aside anything that might contain asbestos (old siding, popcorn ceiling, some flooring) until it's tested.
  • Keep treated lumber and railroad ties out of the general pile.
  • Wrap or box broken glass and mirror pieces.
  • Tell us about concrete, dirt or tile, with rough amounts.

California and LA rules that apply

Work hours matter: LADBS allows construction and demolition from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, with no work on Sundays.[1]

Materials that aren't ordinary debris

Asbestos can show up in older cement, roofing, flooring and siding, and CalRecycle lists it among building materials banned from the trash.[2] Chemically treated wood must be handled as hazardous waste,[2] and home-generated sharps can never go in a roll-off or C&D container.[3]

What affects the price

  • Weight versus volume. A pile of drywall and cabinets fills space; a pile of tile and concrete hits weight limits first.
  • Where it sits. Debris staged in the driveway loads faster than debris in a second-floor bathroom.
  • Mixed vs. sorted. Clean loads of one material are simpler to handle than everything mixed together.
  • Sharp or awkward items. Glass, long beams and nail-heavy lumber take more care.
  • Hazards found in the pile. Anything that has to be pulled out and handled separately adds time.

Free city options vs. paying a hauler

For real remodel debris, the free options are thin. LASAN's curbside program excludes construction materials like concrete, bricks and dirt,[4] and Glendale's bulky pickup won't take construction materials or lumber either.[5] Pasadena's bulky pickup rejects construction and roofing material.[6]

Burbank is the one city with a low-cost do-it-yourself path: after excluding construction materials from bulky pickup, it points residents to its own 2-yard rental bin.[7] That bin holds heavy material only 12 inches deep and has a 1,000 lb cap,[8] so it suits a bathroom tear-out, not a kitchen.

Past that, the choice is between your contractor's hauler, a rented bin, or a pickup. A pickup fits best when the work is done, the pile is already there, and you want it gone in one visit.

Where it goes afterward

Mixed debris in the City of LA goes to City-certified processors, which sort it and recover what they can. LA Sanitation publishes each processor's mixed-C&D recycling rate, and several certified facilities sit in Sun Valley.[9] Burbank's Building Division keeps its own list of certified C&D recyclers in the greater LA area.[10] Glendale adds a stricter rule for land clearing: every tree, stump, rock and bit of vegetation from clearing must be reused or recycled.[11]

Hazardous pieces leave the stream entirely and go to hazardous waste handlers.

Construction debris removal: questions

Should I rent a dumpster or have the debris hauled away?

It depends on whether the work is finished. While demo is still happening, a dumpster lets the crew toss material as it comes out. Once the job is done and the debris is piled up, a haul-away is usually quicker, and nobody on your side has to lift anything.

Will the City of LA's bulky item pickup take remodel debris?

No. LASAN's curbside bulky pickup excludes construction materials such as concrete, bricks and dirt.

What happens if C&D debris goes to the wrong place?

In the City of LA, penalties of up to $5,000 can be assessed for each load of construction and demolition waste that's processed unlawfully. That's one reason to ask any hauler where mixed debris ends up.

Do you take concrete and dirt?

Tell us how much before we come. Concrete, dirt, rock and tile are heavy, they're priced differently from bulky debris, and every truck has a limit on how much weight it can carry. Photos with something for scale, or rough dimensions of the slab or pile, help the most.

Do you take broken glass, windows and doors?

Yes, including old windows and glass doors. Let us know they're in the pile so the crew brings the right gloves and handles them first. Loose broken glass is safer boxed or wrapped before pickup day, and a note on the box saying what is inside helps whoever lifts it.

What can't go in with the remodel debris?

Hazardous materials. Old cement siding, roofing and flooring can contain asbestos, which CalRecycle lists among building materials banned from the trash. Chemically treated wood has to be managed as hazardous waste, and California bars home-generated sharps from any roll-off or C&D container. Leftover paint, solvents and adhesives go to a hazardous waste drop-off.

Do you work with contractors?

Yes. Tell us the site address, how the crew gets to the pile, and when the site is open.

Will you sweep up after?

Yes. Once the pile is loaded, the crew sweeps the area so the driveway, yard or room is clear. Nails and screws are the thing to watch for, so point out spots where the debris sat on dirt or grass.
