Tarzana is on the far side of our usual loop, about 11 miles west of the yard. That distance matters less than the choices you have for getting rid of things, and in the west Valley some of those choices are closer to you than to us.
What jobs look like in Tarzana
Tarzana makes up the western half of the Encino–Tarzana plan area, generally west of Lindley Avenue.[1] Like Encino, it has two distinct parts: the flats north of Ventura Boulevard and the hills to the south.[1]
Tarzana's main ZIP, 91356, is an even split. About 47% of homes are detached houses and about 42% are in buildings of five or more units. Around 42% of occupied homes are rented, and the median home was built in 1973.[2] That mix means two kinds of pickups: condo and apartment pieces where elevators and loading spots matter, and houses where the garage or side yard holds most of the pile. The garage cleanout planner helps with the second kind.
For hillside houses, the details that change a job are the driveway grade, gates, and how far a truck can get to the door. A photo of the route from the house to the street is worth sending with your quote request.
Local rules that affect your junk
Tarzana is in the City of Los Angeles[3],[4] and in Council District 3.[5] LASAN's programs are the same here as anywhere in the city, so here's the condensed version:
- Bulky pickup: free and unlimited for LASAN-serviced homes of 1 to 4 units.[6] Book it at least one business day ahead, for your normal trash day.[6] Name every item, because the crew can only take what's on the work order.[7] The LA bulky pickup guide has the full walkthrough.
- Bins: carts go out before 6 a.m. and come back in by 8 p.m., with lids closed or they may be skipped.[8] An overstuffed black bin isn't a way around bulky pickup.
- Brush: one free extra brush pickup a year, bundled to 4 feet and 30 pounds.[9]
- Tires: up to four a year per City resident at a LASAN yard, rims off, with ID and a utility bill.[10] The tires guide covers the state rules.
- Hazardous items: paint, pool chemicals, propane cylinders and batteries go to a S.A.F.E. Center.[11]
- Refrigerators and AC units need their refrigerant handled by a certified recycler or an EPA-certified technician.[12],[13]
City pickup or a hauler in Tarzana
West Valley residents have more do-it-yourself options than most people realize. Here's how they compare:
| Option | Works well when | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| LASAN curbside bulky pickup | Items are at the curb and you can wait for trash day | Only listed items; homes LASAN services |
| LASAN monthly drop-off (Northridge) | You have a truck and a free Saturday | Only one Saturday a month[6] |
| Your own run to Sunshine Canyon | You have a big load and a truck | One-ton minimum per load[14] |
| A crew like ours | It's heavy, upstairs, or on a deadline | You pay for the truck space and labor |
If you're weighing a rental truck against hiring help, junk removal vs. a DIY truck rental runs through the time and fees.
Getting a dumpster in Tarzana
On hillside streets, check for Red Flag signs: on declared days, parking on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones is banned and vehicles are towed.[15]

Where things can go near Tarzana
General local information, not a list of places we take loads:
- West Valley LASAN yard, 8840 Vanalden Ave., Northridge: free bulky drop-off one Saturday a month, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (remaining 2026 dates: October 10, November 21, December 12).[6] The same yard takes residents' tires on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.[10]
- Hazardous waste and e-waste: the North Valley (Nicole Bernson) S.A.F.E. Center, 10241 N. Balboa Blvd., Northridge, weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[16] Centers may close or change hours in bad weather.[17]
- Landfills: Sunshine Canyon, 14747 San Fernando Road, Sylmar,[18] charges $120 a ton for trash at its July 2024 rates.[14] Calabasas Landfill on Lost Hills Road has a wasteshed restriction,[19] and the County says to call any landfill before you deliver.[20] Chiquita Canyon in Castaic stopped taking waste on January 1, 2025.[21]
- Donations: Goodwill's Woodland Hills donation center at 21840 Ventura Blvd.[22] and a Salvation Army thrift store at 16934 Ventura Blvd. in Encino.[23]
- Small-item pickups: Pickup Please collects for the Vietnam Veterans of America[24] but only takes what one person can carry.[25]
The landfill guide and the San Fernando Valley donation guide go into more detail.
When hiring a crew is worth it
A free drop-off day only helps if you have a truck, a Saturday and a strong back. When you don't, or the load is up a hillside driveway, a crew does the lifting in one trip. We drive over from Victory Blvd in North Hollywood. Text a few pictures of the job and we'll get back to you with a price.

Tarzana: questions
Which ZIP codes are Tarzana?
The City of Los Angeles lists 91356 and 91357 for Tarzana, and the County's ZIP list labels 91356 as Tarzana/Encino. ZIP lines don't follow neighborhood lines, so an address near the edges may carry a neighbor's name. Either way, Tarzana is inside the City of LA, which means LA Sanitation rules apply.
Where does Tarzana end and Encino begin?
LA City Planning treats the two as one community plan area and describes Tarzana as its western half, generally west of Lindley Avenue. That line only matters for maps, though. Both neighborhoods are in the City of LA and use the same LASAN programs, so the free bulky pickup and S.A.F.E. centers work the same on either side.
How far is Tarzana from your yard?
About 11 miles in a straight line from our base on Victory Blvd in North Hollywood. That's not a drive time, and traffic on the way varies. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Sending photos in the morning gives us the most room to plan the route.
Can I take my own junk to a landfill from Tarzana?
You can, but check the rules first. Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar takes public drop-offs without an appointment, but every load is charged a one-ton minimum, and trash is $120 a ton at the rates posted July 1, 2024. Calabasas Landfill is closer to the west Valley but has a wasteshed restriction, so call before you drive there. Our landfill guide compares the options.
Is there a free drop-off day for bulky items near Tarzana?
Yes. Once a month on a Saturday, LASAN opens its West Valley yard at 8840 Vanalden Ave. in Northridge from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for free bulky-item drop-off. Three dates are left in 2026: October 10, November 21 and December 12. City residents can also drop off up to four tires a year there on weekday mornings.
What happens to a pile of brush from a Tarzana hillside yard?
Regular trimmings go in the green bin each week. For the extra, LASAN gives each household it services one free brush pickup a year, in tied bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 30 pounds. A pile that's bigger than that, or mixed with old fencing and furniture, is where a hauler helps.
Will a free donation pickup take my couch in Tarzana?
Not every one will. Pickup Please, which collects for the Vietnam Veterans of America, only takes items one person can carry and lists couches, mattresses and major appliances among the things it won't take. The Salvation Army and Out of the Closet run pickups that can include furniture, each with its own rules. Call first, and ask what condition they need.
Does the hillside part of Tarzana have parking rules I should know about?
Possibly. On Red Flag days, the LA Fire Department bans parking on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones and tows vehicles left there. If your street has those signs, book pickups and bin deliveries on a normal day. Street-sweeping signs on the flats matter too, since posted routes are swept every other week.
How do I get a price for a job in Tarzana?
Text us photos of the items and the ZIP code, and we'll reply with a price. A shot of the driveway helps for hillside homes. If some things are staying, point them out in the photos so the price only covers what's going.
