Chatsworth is the Valley's horse country, tucked below the Santa Susana Pass, and its cleanouts reflect that: barns, corrals, long driveways and a lot of outdoor space. This page covers the City rules that apply, the county pockets on the western edge, and where things can go when the City won't take them.

What jobs look like in Chatsworth

The City's own description of Chatsworth mentions a large number of individual horse properties and several professional boarding ranches,[1] and many streets have bridle paths.[1] The community sits southeast of the Santa Susana Pass[1] and covers about 15 square miles,[1] which makes for bigger lots and more outbuildings than the south Valley.

Housing is mixed. In ZIP 91311, about 57% of homes are detached houses and about 24% are in buildings with five or more units; about a third of households rent.[2] The median home there was built around 1974.[2]

On a horse property, a few things are worth knowing before anyone loads a truck:

  • Old fencing and posts. Wood treated against insects and rot has to be managed as hazardous waste in California,[3] so point it out in your photos.
  • Barn chemicals. Pesticides, herbicides, solvents and similar products go to a household hazardous waste site, not the trash.[3]
  • Tires. They're banned from the trash statewide.[3]

Chatsworth is a new page for us and we don't have a review from a Chatsworth job to share. We'd rather say that than borrow someone else's story. Our shed removal and yard waste removal pages explain how outbuilding and debris jobs work.

Local rules that affect your junk

Chatsworth joined the City of Los Angeles in 1915,[1] so LA Sanitation handles most homes. The rules that come up most:

  • Bulky items: free curbside pickup with no set limit for the 1–4 unit homes LASAN services,[4] booked by MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489 at least one business day before trash day.[4] Crews pick up only what's on the work order, so name every item.[5]
  • Brush: trimmings and clean untreated wood go in the green bin,[6] and there's one free brush pickup a year in tied bundles under 4 feet and 30 pounds.[7]
  • Tires: up to four a year, no rims, free at a LASAN yard, with ID and a utility bill.[8]

Chatsworth has county edges. A small unincorporated area is counted with Chatsworth,[9] ZIP 91311 takes in Twin Lakes and Oat Mountain,[10] and the County runs its own Chatsworth/Westhills residential franchise.[11] Those homes get trash service from a County-contracted hauler, not LASAN.

City pickup or a hauler in Chatsworth

On a big lot, the question is usually how far the stuff is from the curb.

LASAN pickupA hauler
What it costsNothing for LASAN-serviced homes[4]Priced by the load
Where items must beAt the curbWherever they are: barn, back field, garage
Brush and branchesOne free pickup a year, bundled[7]Loose piles are fine
Concrete, dirt, remodel debrisNot collected[4]Ask; C&D has its own rules
TimingYour next trash day[4]Your chosen day, usually next-day out here

If you can get it to the curb and it's on LASAN's list, book the City. If it's spread across a property or needs to be broken down first, a hauler is the practical choice.

Getting a dumpster in Chatsworth

Longer driveways make a private-property bin easier to place, though we couldn't find a City page that sets rules for bins on driveways. New construction and demolition projects fall under the state's 65% diversion rule.[12] See dumpster rental for bin sizes.

Chatsworth: questions

How soon can you get to Chatsworth?

Usually the next day or on a day you choose. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Chatsworth is about 14 miles from our North Hollywood base, though, so out here a booked day is the surer bet. Send photos, your ZIP and what day works, and we'll text back a price and the first slot we can offer.

Do you haul junk from horse properties in Chatsworth?

Yes, we clear general junk, old furniture, yard debris and outbuildings. Tell us what's in the barn or tack room before we come, because some things need special handling. Old fence posts and rails treated against rot or insects count as hazardous waste in California, and pesticides or other chemicals have to go to a household hazardous waste site.

Is my Chatsworth address in the City of LA?

Most of Chatsworth has been part of Los Angeles since 1915. A small unincorporated area also carries the Chatsworth name, and ZIP 91311 reaches into Twin Lakes and Oat Mountain. LA County runs a residential franchise called Chatsworth/Westhills for those pockets. If a City truck collects your bins, LASAN's programs are yours to use.

How do I get rid of old tires in Chatsworth?

City of LA residents can drop off up to four tires a year, without rims, free at a LASAN yard. The West Valley yard is at 8840 Vanalden Ave. in Northridge, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; bring a photo ID and a utility bill. Tires can't go in the trash in California.

Where can I take scrap metal like old gates or pipe?

SA Recycling runs two scrap yards in Sun Valley, at 8250 Tujunga Ave. and 9754 San Fernando Road. They take large appliances and metal but not propane tanks, oil or cardboard, and you need a government photo ID to sell scrap. If the metal is attached to a bigger cleanout, a hauler can take it along with everything else.

Is there a landfill near Chatsworth?

Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center at 2801 Madera Road takes household trash, construction debris and green waste, but no hazardous waste. It's open Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., plus the third Sunday of each month. Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar is the Valley's public landfill, with a one-ton minimum charge on every load.

I live in West Chatsworth or Twin Lakes. Is there anything free for me?

Possibly. LA County offers free services at Sunshine Canyon Landfill to residents of several unincorporated communities, including West Chatsworth and Oat Mountain/Twin Lakes. Each residence can drop off one bulky item and up to four tires a year, and there are two free disposal days a year of up to a ton each. Bring proof of residence, like a driver's license.

What can I do with a big pile of brush and branches?

Fill your green bin first; it takes trimmings and clean untreated wood. Households LASAN services also get one free brush pickup a year, booked through MyLA311, with bundles tied and kept under 4 feet and 30 pounds. Anything larger, or anything you'd rather not bundle, can go with a hauler or to a landfill that accepts green waste.

Where can I donate household items in Chatsworth?

Hope the Mission has a donation drop-off at 9700 Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Chatsworth, open weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For towels and blankets, LA Animal Services lists linens as always needed; its West Valley shelter is at 20655 Plummer Street. Call ahead to check what each place is taking that week.
