Hollywood is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, so LA Sanitation and LA Fire rules apply here, not West Hollywood's. Most people moving junk out of Hollywood live in apartment buildings, which changes how the free options work. Here's the local picture.
What jobs look like in Hollywood
Hollywood is overwhelmingly rented and dense. In ZIP 90028, about 97% of occupied homes are renter-occupied[1] and about 92% of housing units are in buildings of five or more units, with only about 2% detached houses.[1] The median building there dates to 1967.[1]
So a typical Hollywood job is a move-out or a single piece from an apartment in the flats below the Hills,[2] in pockets like Franklin Village, Little Armenia, Thai Town or Spaulding Square.[3] What helps us most:
- Floor and elevator. Say which floor, whether there's an elevator, and whether the building needs you to book it.
- Loading. Tell us whether there's a loading zone, an alley or a driveway. Street sweeping on posted routes runs every other week and tickets parked cars,[4] so we check the signs before we pull up.
- Hillside homes. The Hollywood plan area takes in hillside communities too.[5] Up there, long outdoor stairs are common, and they shape how a heavy item like a spa comes out. One customer described that kind of removal:
Ricardo and Brian did an amazing job helping us out with a difficult removal of a spa from our yard that involved a lot of outdoor stairs. Legacy scheduled us the next morning when they saw we were in need of immediate assistance after another team was unable to complete the job and had to stop half way. Legacy really got us out of a pinch when we needed it most and we are very grateful for them. Thanks very much to all the Legacy team! We will definitely call them again if we need this type of service in the future.
On Red Flag days, parking is banned and cars are towed on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones,[6] so hillside jobs go on another day.
West Hollywood is its own city. ZIPs 90046 and 90069 are shared between West Hollywood and Hollywood,[7] so confirm which city your address is in before relying on anything on this page.
Local rules that affect your junk
Bulky pickup. LA Sanitation collects bulky items at the curb free and without a stated limit for homes it services, and its single-family pages cover 1 to 4 unit homes.[8] Book at least one business day before trash day[8] through MyLA311 online, the app, or 1-800-773-2489, with an itemized list.[8] See the full LA bulky pickup guide.
Move-out boxes. The Move-In/Move-Out extra pickup takes boxes and bags on trash day if you call a business day ahead, with each piece under 30 lb and flattened cardboard tied.[9] Our moving-out checklist covers the last week.
Couches and mattresses are standard bulky items.[8] For a sofa, how to get rid of a couch compares donation, the City and a hauler.
Appliances. LA Sanitation picks up refrigerators, washers, dryers and AC units free for its curbside homes, with a business day's notice and fridge doors removed.[10]
E-waste and batteries. TVs and computers can go out as bulky items or to a S.A.F.E. Center.[11] Batteries, including e-bike and scooter packs, can't go in any household bin.[11]
Hot tubs. LA County's guidance is to let chemicals dissipate before draining and never drain within 5 days of adding them.[12] More in hot tub removal.
Remodel debris can't go at the curb.[8]
City pickup or a hauler in Hollywood
| LA Sanitation bulky pickup | Private junk hauler | |
|---|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Homes LA Sanitation services | Any building |
| Cost | Free | Quoted per job |
| When | Your trash day, booked a business day ahead | Same-day and next-morning pickups most days |
| Carrying | You get it to the curb | Crew carries it down |
City column sources.[8]
If you're in a house or small building LA Sanitation serves, and the item can reach the curb, the free pickup is the obvious choice. A hauler earns its keep when you're on an upper floor with no help, when your building isn't served the same way, when the move-out deadline is tomorrow, or when the item is a spa at the top of a staircase.
Getting a dumpster in Hollywood
In Hollywood, space is the problem. For temporary no-parking signs, LADOT points people to its Special Traffic Control Division at (213) 485-2298.[13]
If the bin is for a remodel, construction hours are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,[14] but in Hillside Construction Regulation districts such as the Bird Streets and Laurel Canyon area, work runs weekdays 8 to 6 with interior work only on Saturdays.[15]
Our dumpster rental page covers bin sizes. For a one-time apartment clear-out, a crew with a truck is often simpler than finding legal space for a bin.

- Out of the Closet picks up for free when you have at least two large furniture items or ten large bags or boxes.[21]
- Tires: City residents can drop off 4 tires a year, without rims, at LA Sanitation yards on weekday mornings, with photo ID and a utility bill.[22]
Calling a hauler in Hollywood
When the stairs, the parking or the deadline make the free options impractical, Legacy comes over from North Hollywood and carries things down for you. Text photos of the items, the stairs or hallway, and where a truck could stop, plus your ZIP, and we'll reply with a price.

Hollywood: questions
Is West Hollywood the same as Hollywood for trash pickup?
No. Hollywood is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, and West Hollywood is its own city. ZIPs 90046 and 90069 are split between the two, so a ZIP alone won't tell you which rules apply. LA Sanitation's bulky pickup is for homes it services inside the City of Los Angeles.
How do I get a couch picked up for free in Hollywood?
If LA Sanitation collects your trash, schedule a bulky item pickup through MyLA311 online, the MyLA311 app, or 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day before your trash day. List every item, because crews only take what's on the work order. Pickup is free and has no stated limit.
I live in a big Hollywood apartment building. Can I use LA Sanitation's bulky pickup?
LA Sanitation's bulky pickup pages are written for homes of 1 to 4 units that it services. Most Hollywood housing is in larger buildings, so ask your building manager who collects the trash and how bulky items are handled there before you put anything out.
What won't LA Sanitation pick up at the curb?
Construction materials like concrete, bricks and dirt, auto parts and used oil, commercial appliances, paint, solvents and chemicals, medicines and needles, fluorescent lights, and cardboard unless it's a scheduled move-in or move-out pickup. Those need a drop-off site or a hauler.
Where is the closest hazardous waste drop-off to Hollywood?
The Los Angeles–Glendale S.A.F.E. Center at 4600 Colorado Blvd., open Saturdays only from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring a state photo ID. It's free for City and County residents, with a limit of 15 gallons or 125 lb per visit, and staff unload your car.
Can LA Sanitation take my moving boxes?
Yes, through its Move-In/Move-Out extra pickup on trash day. Call at least one business day ahead. Flatten and tie cardboard, and keep each bag, box or bundle under 30 lb and no bigger than 2 by 3 feet. Furniture from the same move goes on a separate bulky item request.
Can you remove a hot tub from a Hollywood hillside yard?
Yes. Spa removals with long outdoor stairways are the kind of job we plan for. Send photos of the spa, the path to the street and the stairs. Power must be off before we arrive. If your spa is hardwired, have an electrician disconnect it first. Drain it carefully: LA County says to let chemicals dissipate first and never drain into the storm drain.
What happens to parking on Red Flag days in the Hollywood Hills?
On LAFD-declared Red Flag days, parking is banned on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and cars left there are towed. LAFD says there are about 4 to 7 Red Flag days a year. If your street is posted, book a different day.
