Porter Ranch is the newest corner of the City's Valley neighborhoods, and it shows in the kind of junk jobs it produces: garages in planned communities, move-outs in gated tracts, and homes being cleared before a sale. This page covers what's different about getting things hauled from here.
What jobs look like in Porter Ranch
Porter Ranch was the last part of the Valley within LA city limits to be built out, with most construction starting in the 1970s.[1] The median home in ZIP 91326 dates to 1982, newer than most of the Valley,[2] and about 78% of housing units are detached houses.[2] Roughly three in four households own their home.[2]
The City describes Porter Ranch today as mostly gated communities of single-family homes,[1] much of it master-planned.[1] That changes the logistics more than the junk itself:
- Gate access. Share the call box code, the guard's name or a meeting time when you book, so the truck isn't stuck at the entrance.
- HOA rules. Many associations set rules on work hours, truck parking or items left at the curb. If yours does, tell us before pickup day.
- Foothill streets. Porter Ranch runs up to the Santa Susana Mountains,[1] and homes near the top can have steep driveways. A photo of the driveway helps us plan the carry.

Local rules that affect your junk
Porter Ranch is a City of LA neighborhood,[3] so LASAN handles trash and bulky pickup for most houses:
- Book ahead of trash day. LASAN's bulky service is free and has no set limit for 1–4 unit homes it services.[4] Schedule at least one business day before collection[4] using MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489, with a list of each item.[4]
- Know what qualifies. Furniture, mattresses, toilets, rolled carpet and doors are all accepted.[4] Metal appliances like fridges and washers go free too, with fridge doors removed.[5]
- Keep hazardous items separate. Paint, chemicals, auto parts and construction debris are refused at the curb.[4]
If your HOA restricts what can sit at the curb and for how long, its rules apply on top of the City's. Details are in our LA bulky pickup guide.
ZIP 91326 also covers Twin Lakes and Oat Mountain,[6] which are unincorporated county communities. Residents there get their own free dump allowances at Sunshine Canyon.[7]
City pickup or a hauler in Porter Ranch
| LASAN bulky pickup | Hiring a hauler | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free for LASAN-serviced homes[4] | You pay for the load |
| Getting items out | You bring them to the curb | The crew carries them from inside |
| HOA curb rules | Items wait at the curb until trash day[4] | Loaded and gone the same visit |
| Gated streets | City route | Needs your gate instructions |
| Timing | Next trash day after booking | Next-day or a date you set |
For a couple of big pieces you can move yourself, LASAN is the obvious pick. For a full garage, a house being staged, or an HOA that doesn't want furniture sitting at the curb, a hauler is simpler.
Getting a dumpster in Porter Ranch
Start with your HOA. Many planned communities have rules on where a bin can sit and for how long, and those apply on top of City rules.
On Red Flag days, parking is banned on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones and vehicles are towed,[8] so if your street carries those signs, a bin or truck can't sit there that day. If you want a bin rather than a crew, our dumpster rental page lists the sizes.

Local options for Porter Ranch residents, listed as general information. Check hours before going.
- Goodwill Southern California, 11243 Tampa Ave., Porter Ranch.[9]
- The Salvation Army, 10158 Balboa Blvd., Granada Hills,[10] plus free donation pickup booked online or at 1-800-SA-TRUCK.[11] What it accepts varies by location.[11]
- Hope the Mission, 18167 Chatsworth St., Granada Hills.[12]
- St. Vincent de Paul runs free truck pickups, but items must be outside at street level and labeled; crews don't come into the home.[13] Check whether your HOA allows that.

Porter Ranch: questions
Will you come to Porter Ranch the same day I call?
It can happen, but plan on the next day or a day you pick. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Porter Ranch, though, is about 13 miles from our North Hollywood yard, north of the 118, so booking ahead is the reliable route. Text photos, your ZIP and your gate instructions, and we'll send a price and our first opening.
Can your crew get into a gated community in Porter Ranch?
Usually, as long as we know how. Much of Porter Ranch is gated, so tell us the gate procedure when you book: a call box code, a guard list or a time you'll meet us. Let us know too if your HOA limits truck parking or work hours, and we'll plan the visit around it.
Does LA's free bulky pickup work in Porter Ranch HOA neighborhoods?
It depends on who collects your trash. LASAN's free, unlimited bulky pickup is for 1–4 unit homes that LASAN services. If a City truck empties your bins, book by MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489 at least a business day before trash day. Your HOA may also have its own rules about when items can sit at the curb, so check those too.
Will LASAN pick up a refrigerator or washer in Porter Ranch?
Yes, for homes with LASAN curbside service. The City picks up refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters and air conditioners for free with one business day's notice. Take the doors off a fridge or freezer before it goes out. Crews only collect what's on the work order, so list each appliance when you schedule.
Where's the closest landfill to Porter Ranch?
Sunshine Canyon Landfill at 14747 San Fernando Road in Sylmar. The public can drop off during business hours without an appointment, and the site asks for a completed Origin Report Form. Every load is charged at least one ton and untarped loads cost extra. Chiquita Canyon in Castaic stopped taking waste on January 1, 2025, so it's no longer an option.
I live in Twin Lakes or on Oat Mountain. Do I get free dump days?
Residents of unincorporated Oat Mountain and Twin Lakes are on LA County's list for free services at Sunshine Canyon. Each residence gets one free bulky item and up to four tires a year, plus two free disposal days a year of up to one ton each. You'll need proof of residence such as a driver's license.
Where can I donate furniture near Porter Ranch?
Goodwill Southern California has a boutique and donation center at 11243 Tampa Ave. in Porter Ranch. In Granada Hills, The Salvation Army lists a store at 10158 Balboa Blvd. and Hope the Mission has one at 18167 Chatsworth St. The Salvation Army also runs free pickups you can book online by ZIP code.
Where do I drop off paint and electronics from Porter Ranch?
The North Valley S.A.F.E. Center at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge, open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's free for LA County residents and takes paint, chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and electronics. The line starts on Devonshire St. between Amestoy Ave. and Balboa Blvd.
Can you clear out a house before it's listed for sale?
Yes. Send photos room by room, including the garage, and tell us what stays for staging. We'll text back a price and a date that fits your listing schedule. Our realtor pre-listing guide has a timeline for sorting, donating and hauling before photos.
