Sylmar sits at the top of the San Fernando Valley, and it has something no other neighborhood we serve can claim: the Valley's big public landfill is inside it. That makes "just take it to the dump" feel easy. This page explains what that trip really involves, the City options you already have, and when hiring a crew is the better call.

What jobs look like in Sylmar

Sylmar is a City of LA neighborhood at the north end of the Valley.[1] In ZIP 91342, which it shares with Lake View Terrace,[2] about 63% of homes are detached houses, about 18% are in buildings of five or more units, and about a third of households rent.[3] The median home there was built around 1977.[3]

Sylmar also has a working equestrian community. The City installed an equine crosswalk at Olive View Drive and horse-crossing signs along Foothill Boulevard,[4] and the council office set up an Equine Advisory Council to protect public trails.[4] On a horse property, the load might include old fencing, feeders, tack-room clutter and yard debris. Point out anything painted or chemically treated, since treated wood counts as hazardous waste in California.[5]

Local rules that affect your junk

Sylmar homes follow City of LA rules, and a few of them go further than people expect:

  • Bulky pickup is free and unlimited for 1–4 unit homes LASAN services.[6] Ask for it at least one business day before trash day[6] on MyLA311 or at 1-800-773-2489.[6]
  • Big metal appliances are free, too: fridges, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters and AC units, with fridge and freezer doors removed.[7] Refrigerant has to be pulled by a certified recycler or an EPA-certified technician before an appliance is scrapped.[8],[9]
  • Brush clearance matters here. The council office secured extra brush-clearance funding for Sylmar's Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.[4] Regular trimmings go in the green bin, and LASAN gives each serviced home one free brush pickup a year.[10],[11]

Red Flag days affect loading. When LAFD declares one, parking is banned on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones and vehicles are towed.[12] These days average 4 to 7 a year.[12] If your street is signed, a pickup may need to move.

Getting a dumpster in Sylmar

  • Chiquita Canyon in Castaic has been closed to waste since January 1, 2025.[17]
  • LASAN East Valley yard, 11050 Pendleton St., Sun Valley: free monthly Saturday bulky drop-off (remaining 2026 dates: Oct 10, Nov 21, Dec 12)[6] and up to four tires a year for City residents.[18]
  • S.A.F.E. Centers: 11025 Randall Street, Sun Valley,[19] and 10241 N. Balboa Blvd., Northridge,[20] both weekends 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

How quickly can you pick up junk in Sylmar?

Can I take my junk to Sunshine Canyon Landfill myself?

Yes. Sunshine Canyon at 14747 San Fernando Road takes public drop-offs during business hours without an appointment. It's open weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to noon, and closed Sunday. Bring a completed Origin Report Form and cover your load with a tarp, or you'll pay an extra charge. Call (818) 362-2124 first to confirm hours.

Why does a small load cost so much at Sunshine Canyon?

Because every load is billed as at least one ton. At the posted July 2024 rate of $120 a ton for household trash, a few bags cost the same as a full ton. There's also a $19.71 environmental fee per load, a $175 charge if the load isn't tarped, and per-item charges for appliances, computers and monitors.

What won't Sunshine Canyon accept?

No hazardous or liquid waste, untreated medical waste, car batteries or whole tires. Paint, chemicals, batteries and electronics can go to a S.A.F.E. Center instead, and City of LA residents can drop off up to four tires a year free at a LASAN yard. The landfill takes ordinary non-hazardous waste from homes and businesses in LA County.

I live in Kagel Canyon or Lopez Canyon. Do I get free dumping?

Probably. LA County gives residents of several unincorporated communities, including Kagel Canyon, Lopez Canyon and Lake Manor, free services at Sunshine Canyon. Each residence can drop off one bulky item and up to four tires a year, and there are two free disposal days a year of up to one ton each. Bring a driver's license or other proof of address.

Does LASAN pick up old refrigerators in Sylmar?

Yes, for homes that get LASAN curbside service. Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters and air conditioners are collected free with a business day's notice before trash day. Remove refrigerator and freezer doors first. Schedule through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489 and name each appliance, since crews only take what's on the order.

Can a truck park on my Sylmar street on a Red Flag day?

Not if your street is posted. On Red Flag days, the City bans parking on signed streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones and tows vehicles that stay. That applies to junk trucks and bins as much as to cars. If a Red Flag warning lands on your pickup day, plan on picking a new date with us.

Where's the closest hazardous waste drop-off to Sylmar?

The two Valley S.A.F.E. Centers are the East Valley site at 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley and the North Valley site at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge. Both are open Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., free for LA County residents. You can bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.

Where can I donate things near Sylmar?

Two thrift stores in neighboring Granada Hills take household goods: The Salvation Army (10158 Balboa Blvd.) and Hope the Mission (18167 Chatsworth St.).
