Renting a bin in Sylmar comes with an odd twist: the Valley's big public landfill sits right in the neighborhood, on San Fernando Road, so it's fair to ask why you'd rent anything. This page covers when a bin beats doing your own dump runs, what horse-property cleanups involve, fire-season parking, and the canyon addresses where City of LA rules don't apply.

Houses with room for a bin

Sylmar is mostly owner-occupied houses. In ZIP 91342, about 63% of housing units are single-family detached homes, and only about 32% of households rent.[1] The median home there was built in 1977.[1] For most people renting a bin here, that means the spot is their own driveway or side yard, and nobody else's approval is needed.

15-yard bin: $479, with 1 ton of disposal, delivery and pickup included. 20-yard bin: $579, with 2 tons of disposal, delivery and pickup included. Rental length and any charge over the included weight are confirmed when you book. Prices are for addresses within about 10 miles of North Hollywood (91606). Farther out? Call or text for a price.

Give us the length of the spot. If there's a gate, a slope or a soft dirt area where the bin would sit, send a photo.

A landfill in your backyard

Sunshine Canyon Landfill is at 14747 San Fernando Road in Sylmar.[2] It's an active landfill operated by Republic Services.[3] We mention it here as general local information, not as where any bin goes.

Having it close makes "I'll just take it myself" tempting. The catch is how it charges. Every load is billed at a one-ton minimum,[4] so a half-full pickup bed costs the same as a full ton. Loads that aren't tarped carry an extra $175 charge.[4] The landfill also asks drop-off customers to bring a completed Origin Report Form.[2]

A cleanout that fills three pickup beds over a month means three one-ton minimums and three afternoons. A bin collects all of it, and one truck takes it away.

Horse properties and outbuildings

Sylmar has a working equestrian community. The City put in an equine crosswalk at Olive View Drive, with horse-crossing signs along Foothill Boulevard,[5] and the council office set up an Equine Advisory Council to protect public trails.[5] Clearing out a barn, tack room or old corral is a natural bin project: rails, boards, broken feeders and years of stored odds and ends.

One material needs care. California requires chemically treated wood, the kind preserved against insects and rot, to be handled as hazardous waste,[6] so treated posts and rails can't go in a regular bin. Old motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries from a barn or shop are on the state's banned-from-trash list too.[6] Separate them before the bin arrives.

Fire zones and Red Flag days

Sylmar has Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones; the council office secured extra brush-clearance funding for them.[5] On LAFD-declared Red Flag days, parking is banned on posted streets in those zones and vehicles are towed.[7] If your street is signed, the bin belongs on your property, and a delivery or pickup may have to move to another day.

Brush from clearance work is usually better off outside the roll-off. It belongs in the green bin,[8] and LA Sanitation homes get one free brush pickup a year.[9] Save the bin for mixed debris.

Canyon addresses and the City line

ZIP 91342 covers Sylmar and Lake View Terrace, which are City of LA, plus Kagel Canyon and Lopez Canyon.[10] Those canyons are unincorporated county communities.[11]

Canyon residents do get their own perk at Sunshine Canyon: one free bulky item, up to four tires and two free disposal days a year, with proof of residence.[11]

What stays out of the bin

We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.

For the hazardous items, the nearest S.A.F.E. Centers are the Nicole Bernson center at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge[12] and the Randall Street center in Sun Valley,[12] both open weekends. City residents can drop up to four tires a year, without rims, at an LA Sanitation yard.[13]

Sylmar bin prep

  • Confirm your address is City of LA, not Kagel or Lopez Canyon.
  • Measure the driveway or yard spot and photograph any slope or soft ground.
  • Sort treated posts and rails from plain lumber.
  • Pull motor oil, antifreeze and batteries out of the barn or garage first.
  • Check your street for Red Flag parking signs.
  • Keep brush in the green bin unless it's mixed with other debris.

When a crew pickup fits better

A bin is for projects that grow. If the barn is already cleared into a pile, or the garage is packed and you just want it empty, a crew loads it all in one visit. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Brenda's Google review, which lists the "Pick-up location: Sylmar, Ca.", thanks the crew for making the process "so quick and stress-free."

Text us photos of the project, the access and your address. Our family-run crew from North Hollywood will tell you which one saves you money.

Questions

Sunshine Canyon is right here. Why rent a bin instead of hauling it myself?

Because every load there is charged at least one ton, however light it is. A few pickup-truck runs of cleanout debris can add up to several one-ton minimums, plus the time in line and a charge if a load isn't tarped. A bin collects all of it in one place. For a single heavy load and your own truck, the landfill trip can still make sense.

Can I put old corral fencing or stall boards in the bin?

Plain untreated wood, generally yes. Chemically treated wood, the kind preserved against rot and insects, has to be managed as hazardous waste in California, so it can't go in a regular bin. Tell us what the fencing is when you book. If you're not sure, a photo helps us figure it out.

Is my Sylmar ZIP always in the City of LA?

Not always. ZIP 91342 covers Sylmar and Lake View Terrace, which are City of LA, but also Kagel Canyon and Lopez Canyon, which are unincorporated county communities.

What happens if a Red Flag day hits during my rental?

On posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, parking is banned and vehicles are towed when LAFD declares a Red Flag day. Sylmar has these zones. Keep the bin on your property, not a posted street, and expect that a delivery or pickup truck may not be able to stop there on those days, so the date could shift.

Where do the things that can't go in the bin go?

Paint, chemicals, batteries, pool chemicals and electronics go to a S.A.F.E. Center. The closest to Sylmar are the Nicole Bernson center on Balboa Blvd. in Northridge and the Randall Street center in Sun Valley, both open weekends 9 to 3. Tires go to an LA Sanitation yard, up to four a year per City household.

Can I use the bin for brush clearance?

It's usually not the best use. Brush and trimmings belong in the green bin under City rules, and LA Sanitation homes get one free brush pickup a year in tied bundles. A bin fits better when brush is mixed with other debris, like an old shed or fence coming down at the same time. Tell us the mix when you call.
