What jobs look like in Encino

City Planning describes Encino as two distinct areas: the flats north of Ventura Boulevard and the hills south of it.[1] The wider Encino–Tarzana plan area runs from the 405 on the east to Mulholland Drive on the south.[1]

The two main ZIPs look very different on paper:

ZIPDetached houses5+ unit buildingsRenter-occupiedMedian year built
91436about 82%about 16%about 21%1962
91316about 41%about 54%about 50%1969

The figures are Census ACS 2024 five-year estimates by ZIP, and ZIP lines don't follow neighborhood lines exactly.[2],[3],[4]

In 91436, where most houses are owner-occupied and date from around the early 1960s, a job might be a garage, a spare room, or a house being emptied before a sale. For that last one, see estate cleanout and the LA County estate cleanout guide. In 91316, apartments and condos make up about half the housing, so single pieces and move-outs come up more.

In the hills, the carry is usually the whole job. Steep driveways, gates and a truck that can't park at the door add time, so a photo of the path to the street helps us plan. If the job includes outdoor pieces like patio furniture, a spa or a pile of yard debris, see hot tub removal and yard waste removal.

Local rules that affect your junk

Encino is a City of LA neighborhood,[5],[6] planned together with Tarzana.[7] What that means for your pile:

  • Free curbside bulky pickup covers LASAN-serviced homes of 1 to 4 units.[8] Schedule by MyLA311 (online or the app) or 1-800-773-2489, with an itemized list, at least one business day before trash day.[8] Everything about it: bulky item pickup in LA.
  • Yard trimmings belong in the green bin every week, which every City resident is required to use.[9] Extra brush gets one free pickup a year, in tied bundles up to 4 feet and 30 pounds.[10] More in how to get rid of yard waste.
  • Spas and pools. County guidance says to let chemicals dissipate, not to drain within 5 days of adding them, and never to backwash a filter into the street or storm drain.[11] Storm drains carry water to creeks and the ocean untreated.[11] See how to get rid of a hot tub.
  • Appliances. Refrigerators, washers and water heaters go out free through LASAN's metal appliance pickup; remove fridge doors first.[12] The refrigerant rules are in the refrigerator guide.
  • Paint and chemicals go to a S.A.F.E. Center, and California doesn't allow even dried paint in the trash.[13],[14]

For a steep hillside lot, the curb is often the real obstacle. For a flat lot with a short driveway and no deadline, the free pickup is hard to beat. Our comparison guide goes deeper.

Getting a dumpster in Encino

On hillside streets, check whether yours is posted for Red Flag days: parked vehicles there are towed when LAFD declares one.[15] LAFD says that averages 4 to 7 days a year.[15]

On the flats, most people put a bin on the driveway. Details on sizes and scheduling are on dumpster rental.

Where things can go near Encino

This is general local information, not a list of places we use:

  • Donations in Encino: the Salvation Army lists a thrift store at 16934 Ventura Blvd.[16] It also does free pickups booked at 1-800-SA-TRUCK, and accepted items vary by location.[17]
  • Donations nearby: Goodwill's Sherman Oaks store at 14760 Ventura Blvd.[18] Goodwill wants items in clean, sellable condition and doesn't repair anything.[19]
  • Building materials and working appliances: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles serves the San Fernando Valley,[20] and its ReStores take working appliances under 8 years old and furniture with no missing pieces.[21] A pickup costs a fee; drop-off is free.[21]
  • Paint, batteries and e-waste: the North Valley (Nicole Bernson) S.A.F.E. Center at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge, Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.[22] The limit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds a visit.[13]
  • Mattresses: a free Bye Bye Mattress drop-off, found with the program's location search.[23]

When to bring in a crew

If the items are already by the curb and you can wait for trash day, use the City. If they're in a hillside garage, behind a gate, or part of a whole-house job with a closing date, a crew saves the carrying and the scheduling. We come over from Victory Blvd in North Hollywood. Snap a few pictures, text them over, and we'll send a price back.

Encino: questions

Is Encino in the City of Los Angeles?

Yes. Encino is a City of LA neighborhood, planned together with Tarzana in the Encino–Tarzana Community Plan. LA Sanitation handles curbside trash and bulky pickup for the homes it services, and LA's S.A.F.E. centers take your paint and electronics. Its main ZIPs are 91316 and 91436, and part of 91403 is shared with Sherman Oaks.

Do you work in the Encino hills south of Ventura Blvd?

Yes. Hillside homes mean longer carries, steeper driveways and sometimes a truck parked some way down the street, so tell us about the driveway, any gate and the path from the house when you send photos. Those details shape how long the job takes and how we load. If your street has posted Red Flag no-parking signs, pick a day without a Red Flag warning.

What are Red Flag parking days, and do they affect a pickup?

On days the LA Fire Department declares a Red Flag day, parking is banned on posted streets in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, and illegally parked vehicles are towed. Red Flag days are declared when winds reach 25 mph or more with humidity at 15% or less. LAFD says there are about 4 to 7 a year. If your street is posted, plan any truck or trailer visit for another day.

Can LASAN pick up a hot tub in Encino?

LASAN's bulky list covers furniture, mattresses, fixtures, carpet, large wood pieces and e-waste, and a spa isn't on it. Before any spa goes, the water has to be drained properly. LA County Public Works says to let chemicals dissipate, wait at least 5 days after adding chemicals, and never send filter backwash into the street or storm drain. Our hot tub removal page explains the rest.

How do I get rid of a big pile of branches in Encino?

Tree and bush trimmings go in the green bin every week, which is required citywide. For extra brush, LASAN gives each household it services one free brush pickup a year: tie it in bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 30 pounds, and book through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. Bigger piles, stumps and soil are a job for a hauler.

Is there a place in Encino to donate furniture?

The Salvation Army lists a thrift store at 16934 Ventura Blvd. in Encino. It also runs free donation pickups booked by ZIP code or at 1-800-SA-TRUCK. What it accepts varies by location, and it turns down appliances with mechanical problems, gas appliances and TVs more than five years old, so call before you load the car.

How far is Encino from your base?

About 8 miles in a straight line from our yard on Victory Blvd in North Hollywood. That's a straight-line figure, not a drive time. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Texting photos early in the day gives us the best chance of fitting you in.

Where is the nearest hazardous waste drop-off to Encino?

For most of Encino the closest S.A.F.E. center is the North Valley (Nicole Bernson) center at 10241 N. Balboa Blvd. in Northridge, open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You stay in your car while staff unload. Bring no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.

Can the city take an old fridge from my Encino house?

If LASAN collects your trash, yes. Its metal appliance pickup covers refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters and air conditioners at no extra cost. Book it at least a business day before trash day and take the fridge or freezer doors off. If the fridge is in a garage at the top of a steep driveway, getting it to the curb is the hard part.

How do I get a quote in Encino?

Send photos of everything that's going and your ZIP, and we'll text back a price. For hillside homes, add a photo of the driveway or the path to the street. If it's a whole-house job, a quick walk-through video works well. Nothing needs to be boxed or sorted before you send it.
