What does residential junk removal include?

Anything from a single chair to a full house. We pick up from wherever it sits, inside, the backyard, the garage or the driveway, load it into our truck, and sweep up. Text photos and your ZIP for a price. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common.

What we take

  • Furniture and mattresses
  • Appliances
  • Garage and closet clutter
  • Patio furniture and yard debris
  • Old electronics and exercise equipment
  • Moving leftovers

Ask us first

  • We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.

Always included

Loading, hauling, disposal and sweep-up are included.

How it works

Most jobs go from first text to swept-up driveway the same way.

  1. Send photos

Text a few photos and your ZIP, or use the quote form. Wide shots of the pile or room work best.

“Sent them a pic and they sent a quote with a range low to high…” Tim S.

  2. Get a price by text

We text back a price based on truck space and labor.

“Got a call back from Ricardo immediately after placing online request.” Stacy O.

  3. Pick a time

Same-day and next-morning pickups most days. We give you a window and text before we arrive.

“They gave me a 2 hr service window and texted me 20 min before their arrival.” Janet S.

  4. We haul it and sweep up

We carry everything out from wherever it sits, load the truck, and sweep up before we leave.

“took everything, broke down old play equipment, and even swept up.” Michelle M.

How much does residential junk removal cost?

Pricing is based on how much truck space your items take up, plus labor. Free photo quotes by text: send photos and get an exact price. Stairs, long carries and heavy material like concrete or dirt change the number. Your quote includes loading, hauling, disposal and sweep-up. The price we quote is the price you pay.

Text us a few photos and your ZIP. You get a price back by text, and that's the number you pay unless what's there is different from what was in the photos.

Fastest quote: text photos of your items to (909) 566-3090.

Most household junk isn't dramatic. It's the broken recliner, the treadmill nobody uses, the pile of moving boxes, the old TV in the guest room. Knowing which things your bins, the City and a hauler each handle saves a lot of trips. Here's the breakdown.

What's included, step by step

  1. Text photos and your ZIP. Include every item and where it's sitting. A price comes back by text.
  2. Pick a time. Open 24 hours. Call or text anytime. You get a window and a text when the crew is on the way.
  3. Point and go. Show the crew what's leaving. Nothing else gets touched.
  4. Carry and load. From inside, upstairs, the garage or the backyard, wherever the item sits.
  5. Sweep up the spot where the pile was.

Before the truck arrives

  • Make sure everything on your list is in the photos you sent.
  • Take batteries out of remotes, toys and tools.
  • Pull paint cans, cleaners and propane bottles out of the pile.
  • Empty drawers and cabinets on furniture that's leaving.
  • Clear a path through the house and unlock the side gate.
  • Save a parking spot close to the door if you can.

California and LA rules that apply

Some everyday items can't go in any bin or in a hauler's general load, because state law keeps them out of the trash:

ItemThe rule
TVs, monitors, laptops, printers, microwaves, phonesOn California's trash-ban list[1]
Batteries of any size, rechargeable or notBanned from trash, recycling and green bins[1]
Paint, including dried paintCan't go in the trash[2]
Fluorescent tubes and LED bulbsKeep out of the trash[1]
Aerosol cans that aren't emptyBanned when contents are hazardous[1]
TiresBanned from the trash[1]
Needles and lancetsNot allowed in any bin[3]

In the City of LA, the black bin is for trash only, not recyclables, organics, hazardous waste or bulky items like furniture and mattresses.[4] The lid has to close, or the bin may not be collected.[5] Batteries, bulbs, paint and electronics go free to a S.A.F.E. Center, which any LA County resident can use.[6],[7]

Leaving things on the sidewalk to see if someone takes them has a legal edge, too. California's Penal Code bars dumping waste on roads, public property or private property without the owner's consent, and each day the waste stays counts as a separate violation.[8]

What affects the price

  • How much space it takes in the truck. One chair and a garage's worth of junk are priced very differently.
  • Where it is. Curbside is quickest; second floors, basements and backyards behind narrow gates take longer.
  • What it weighs. Dirt, rock, concrete and gym weights are heavy for their size.
  • Special handling. Fridges and freezers need refrigerant removal,[9] and tires, mattresses and electronics each have their own paths.

Free city options vs. paying a hauler

Your city probably already offers free pickup for bulky household items, and for a single couch with no deadline it's hard to beat:

CityFree bulky pickupNotice needed
Los Angeles (LASAN homes)No item limit[10]1 business day[10]
BurbankFree, but appliances, mattresses and tires carry a per-item fee[11]1–2 business days[11]
Glendale (1–4 units)Items on the City's list[12]3 business days[13]
Pasadena2 a year, about 3 cubic yards each[14],[15]2 weeks[14]

LASAN also picks up metal appliances like washers, dryers and water heaters for free,[16] and a new mattress delivery comes with a free take-back offer for the old one under state law.[17]

The tradeoff is the work on your end: you carry everything to the curb, list each item when you book, and wait for your trash day. A paid pickup makes more sense when things are heavy or upstairs, when you need them gone today, or when the pile mixes bulky items with bags and boxes the city won't take as bulky. The city guides have the details for Los Angeles, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena, and city pickup vs. a private hauler walks through the choice.

I needed an excessive amount of cardboard boxes removed from my recent move. They came out the day after calling, per my choice as they wouldve came out the same day. The guys were very nice, professional and gave me a price before removing anything. Such a big help, now I dont have to look at a stack of cardboard and try to move them each week to my tiny recycling bin.

Where it goes afterward

Household junk splits into what can be reused, what can be recycled, and what can't. Clean, sellable furniture can go to donation; Goodwill Southern California's guidelines list sofas, tables, chairs and dressers as acceptable.[18] Electronics are recycled through approved e-waste collectors,[19] mattresses through the state's Bye Bye Mattress program,[17] and metal through scrap recycling. Burbank notes that most of what its own bulky crews collect ends up in a landfill, with electronics, metal appliances and mattresses recycled, and asks residents to donate or sell usable items first.[11] That's good advice anywhere: pull out the best pieces before the truck comes.

Ricardo and Brian showed up the same morning and moved my annual junk pile quickly and cleanly, at a great price! Last year, I paid GotJunk twice as much and they took a perfectly good pop up canopy set that was not part of my junk pile and then couldn't find it afterwards. Not so with Legacy. Family owned and what a great family!

Great experience with Legacy Junk Removal. I was able to schedule next day. They showed up on time, took everything, broke down old play equipment, and even swept up. No hidden fees or overages. Would recommend and use again.

This team did an outstanding job! The three guys worked so hard and delivered such great quality that they even managed to make a penny pincher like me want to tip them.

Residential junk removal: questions

Do you pick up just one item?

Yes. A single recliner, one old TV or a small pile by the side gate is fine. Send a photo and your ZIP and you'll get a price for just that. If you're in the City of LA and not in a hurry, the free bulky pickup is also worth checking for a single piece.

Do I have to bring things to the curb?

No. The crew carries from wherever things are: a back bedroom, the garage, the backyard, an upstairs closet. Carrying heavy things down stairs and through doorways is the part most people want to hand off, and it's included. That's also the biggest difference from free city pickup, which only collects at the curb.

Can you take things from the backyard?

Yes. Mention side gates, steps, narrow walkways and anything the crew has to get around, like a pool, a slope or a dog that needs to stay inside. A photo of the path from the backyard to the street helps plan the carry and keeps the price accurate.

Do you text before you arrive?

Yes. You get an arrival window when you book and a text when the crew is on the way, so you don't have to wait by the door all day. If you won't be home, tell us where the items are and how to reach you, and the crew can work from your photos.

Is it cheaper than a national franchise?

We can't speak to other companies' prices. Several customers have said our quote came in under others they got, so the fair test is to send the same photos to everyone and compare. Ask each one whether loading, disposal and cleanup are in the price.

What can't go in my regular trash bin in LA?

LASAN's black bin isn't for recyclables, food and yard waste, hazardous items like batteries, paint, bulbs and electronics, or bulky items like furniture, mattresses and tires. The lid also has to close or the bin may not be emptied. Anything too big goes to bulky pickup or a hauler.

Can the City take my old couch for free?

In the City of LA, yes, if LASAN collects your trash. Book at least one business day before trash day through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489 and list every item. Burbank also takes couches free for City customers, Glendale needs three business days' notice, and Pasadena gives two free pickups a year.

What about my old washer, dryer or water heater?

LASAN picks up large metal appliances for free for homes it serves, including washers, dryers, water heaters and fridges, with one business day's notice. Burbank charges a per-item special handling fee for appliances. If you'd rather not move them to the curb, we can take them from where they sit.

How do I get rid of an old mattress when I buy a new one?

Ask the store. In California, a retailer that delivers a new mattress has to offer to take the old one back at no additional cost, though delivery fees can still apply and it has up to 30 days to pick up. If that doesn't work, a Bye Bye Mattress drop-off site or a hauler are the other routes.

What do I do with branches and yard trimmings?

Small amounts go in your green bin. LASAN also gives each home it serves one free brush pickup a year, with bundles tied, no longer than 4 feet and under 30 pounds each. For a big pile or yard debris mixed with other junk, a hauler takes it in one load.

Can I leave stuff on the sidewalk with a 'free' sign?

Be careful. Leaving waste on public property, roads or someone else's property without consent is illegal dumping under the California Penal Code, and each day it stays counts as another violation. If it doesn't get taken quickly, book a pickup instead of letting it sit.

How fast can you come?

Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common. Text photos early in the day for the best chance at a same-day slot, and tell us if you have a deadline, like a move-in, a furniture delivery or guests arriving. City bulky pickup, by comparison, runs on your trash day.
