Furniture removal in Glendale
5.0 on Google from 463 reviews
Glendale's bulky pickup handles plenty of furniture, but it runs on a written list and a few packing rules that catch people out. Here's how to get a couch, dresser or dining set through the City's process, what apartment buildings do instead, and where good pieces can go before anyone hauls them away.
Is your piece on the City list?
The City collects bulky items for single-family homes and buildings of 1 to 4 units.[1] Furniture is on its accepted list, alongside appliances, exercise equipment and wrapped mattresses, and the rule is simple: an item that isn't on the list isn't accepted.[2]
The list also excludes some things that often travel with furniture. Crews won't take lumber, construction materials, bagged trash or cardboard.[2] A bookcase you built into a closet, the plywood from a torn-out bunk bed, or the boxes from a new sofa all need a different route.
Glass, mirrors and rugs: the prep Glendale requires
Three kinds of furniture need work before the curb:
- Anything with glass. Mirrors, china cabinets with glass doors and glass-top tables must be wrapped, or crews leave them.[1] Cardboard and tape or an old blanket both work.
- Rugs and carpet. They're accepted only rolled and taped or tied, at most 5 feet long and under 2 feet across.[2] A room-size rug has to be cut into shorter rolls.
- Patio heaters. Their propane tanks aren't accepted, so remove the tank before the heater goes out.[1]
Booking windows and set-out
Request the pickup at least three business days ahead, online or in the Recycle Coach app.[1] The City publishes day-by-day cutoffs; a Friday pickup, for example, has to be requested by Tuesday.[2] Pieces go to the curb after 6:00 p.m. the evening before, fully off private property.[1]
Leaving furniture at the curb without arranging disposal counts as illegal dumping in Glendale and can be fined.[3] That includes a couch you set out hoping a neighbor will claim it.
Apartment buildings with five or more units
More than half of Glendale's housing units are in buildings of five or more units,[4] and those buildings are served by private haulers rather than the City.[1] The hauler gives each property up to four free bulky appointments a year, with no more than four items per appointment.[5]
For a household moving out of a one-bedroom, that cap bites fast. A bed frame, dresser, nightstand and desk fill one appointment, and the couch and table would need another. Because the allowance belongs to the building, a manager may already have promised the remaining slots.
Carrying furniture out of a larger building also takes planning. Sweeping rules are enforced by the sign even after the sweeper has passed.[6]
Donating furniture in Glendale
Donate before you discard if the piece is clean and whole. Goodwill Southern California takes sofas, tables, chairs and dressers,[7] but only in good, sellable shape; it doesn't repair or reupholster anything.[7] Its Glendale store is at 240 N. Brand Blvd.[8]
The Salvation Army lists a Glendale thrift store at 333 N. Central Ave.[9] It offers free furniture pickup booked online or at 1-800-SA-TRUCK,[10] and it generally takes unbroken furniture.[10] Out of the Closet is a poor fit for many Glendale living rooms, since it turns down wall units, china cabinets and office furniture.[11]
Hauling it yourself to Scholl Canyon
Glendale residents have a landfill in town. Scholl Canyon, north of the 134 and run by the LA County Sanitation Districts,[12] accepts waste generated in Glendale and a short list of nearby cities and communities.[12] It lists bulky items at $100.91 per ton with a 1-ton minimum,[13] so a single armchair is billed as a full ton. Hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.[12] The scales don't take checks.[12]
Before Glendale furniture leaves
- Check who serves your building: the City (1–4 units) or a private hauler (5 or more).
- Wrap mirrors and glass doors, and pull the propane tank from any patio heater.
- Roll rugs to under 5 feet long and tie them.
- Photograph pieces you'd like donated and call the charity before loading.
- Empty drawers and cushions, and bag any loose hardware.
When a crew is the better call in Glendale
A crew makes sense when a building's four-item appointments are spoken for, when a sectional won't make it down the stairs without someone who's done it before, or when the lease ends before the next cutoff. Legacy works in Glendale. Pricing is based on how much truck space your items take up, plus labor. Free photo quotes by text: send photos and get an exact price. We donate items that are in fair shape so they get a second life, and recycle what we can. Questions
Will Glendale pick up a dresser with a mirror?
Only if the mirror is wrapped. Glendale won't pick up anything with glass, like mirrors or cabinet doors, unless it's wrapped. Take the mirror off the dresser if it unbolts, wrap it in cardboard or a moving blanket and tape it, and set both pieces out together.
How many pieces of furniture can my Glendale apartment building put out?
Buildings with five or more units get up to four free appointments per property per calendar year through their private hauler, and each appointment is limited to four bulky items. A sofa, loveseat, coffee table and armchair already use one full appointment.
Can I take a couch to the dump in Glendale?
Scholl Canyon Landfill takes waste generated in Glendale and a few nearby cities. It lists bulky items at $100.91 per ton with a 1-ton minimum, so one couch pays the minimum. It's open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays until 3:30 p.m., and takes cash or certain cards but not checks.
Where can I donate furniture in Glendale?
Goodwill Southern California has stores at 240 N. Brand Blvd. and a Montrose donation center at 2064 Verdugo Rd., and it takes sofas, tables, chairs and dressers in clean, sellable shape. The Salvation Army lists a store at 333 N. Central Ave. and offers free pickup through 1-800-SA-TRUCK.
Does Glendale take area rugs with bulky pickup?
Yes, if they're prepared the City's way. Carpet and rugs must be rolled and taped or tied, no more than 5 feet long and under 2 feet in diameter. A large rug has to be cut into shorter rolls first.
Can a crew take furniture from a Glendale apartment without the curb?
Yes. A crew carries pieces out from the room they're in, so there's no set-out time or wrapping requirement. Tell us the floor, whether there's an elevator you can reserve, and where a truck can stop. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common.
