Dumpster rental in Van Nuys
5.0 on Google from 463 reviews
Van Nuys is two neighborhoods in one when it comes to placing a bin: quiet single-family streets, and apartment-lined boulevards. This page covers where a bin can realistically go here, why landlords rent them, how to keep strangers from filling yours, and what to send elsewhere.
Side streets vs. boulevards
City Planning describes most of Van Nuys's residential neighborhoods as single-family homes, with multi-family buildings concentrated around the Civic Center and along the larger boulevards.[1] The ZIP numbers back that up in different ways. In 91405, about 66% of housing units are in buildings of five or more and about 73% of households rent.[2] In 91406, a ZIP shared with Lake Balboa,[3] about 42% of units are detached houses and 59% of households rent.[4]
On a side street with a house, the driveway is the natural spot. On a boulevard with an apartment building, the lot or carport belongs to the owner, who decides where a bin can sit and for how long.
15-yard bin: $479, with 1 ton of disposal, delivery and pickup included. 20-yard bin: $579, with 2 tons of disposal, delivery and pickup included. Rental length and any charge over the included weight are confirmed when you book. Prices are for addresses within about 10 miles of North Hollywood (91606). Farther out? Call or text for a price. On a busy boulevard, the parking lane is right next to traffic, which makes a private spot even more attractive. On side streets, read the sweeping sign; signed routes are swept every other week and parked vehicles are cited.[5]
Landlords and unit turnovers
With that many rentals, a common Van Nuys bin job is an owner turning over a unit. New flooring, stripped cabinets, a pulled-out bathroom: that's debris produced over several days, which is what a bin is built for. A few things make it smoother:
- Put the bin where it won't take tenants' assigned spaces, and tell residents it's for the project only.
- Line up the drop-off for the first demo day and the pickup for the day the last debris comes out.
- Pull out appliances before demo. LA Sanitation picks up fridges, washers, dryers, water heaters and AC units free for homes it services, with fridge and freezer doors removed.[6] A bigger building may not qualify, since the City's bulky programs are set up for homes of one to four units.[7]
If a unit is full of a former tenant's belongings rather than construction debris, read our abandoned property cleanout guide before anything gets thrown out.
Keeping other people's junk out of your bin
An open bin on a busy street can attract other people's trash. California's Penal Code makes it unlawful to dump waste on private property without the owner's consent,[8] and fines on a first conviction run from $250 to $1,000, with each day the waste stays counting as a separate violation.[8] That doesn't stop it happening, so:
- Keep the bin on your property, not the street, whenever you can.
- Fill it steadily and call for pickup as soon as the job ends, instead of leaving it half-empty for weeks.
- Report dumping around your building through MyLA311 or at 800-773-2489.[9]
What to send somewhere else
A lot of what comes out of a Van Nuys apartment shouldn't go in a roll-off at all.
Moving boxes. LA Sanitation's Move-In/Move-Out pickup takes boxes and bags on trash day with one business day's notice. Every bag or bundle has to stay under 30 pounds and 2 by 3 feet, and cardboard gets flattened and tied.[10]
Bottles and cans. CalRecycle lists JD Recycling at 14411 Victory Blvd. as a CRV buyback center.[11]
Hazardous leftovers. Van Nuys borders Sun Valley,[12] where the East Valley S.A.F.E. Center on Randall St. takes paint, batteries, chemicals and electronics free on weekends, 9 to 3.[13],[14]
We don't take paint, chemicals (like motor oil and solvents), tires, asbestos, medical waste, ammunition or propane tanks, empty or full. We'll point you to the right drop-off.Businesses in the industrial zones
Van Nuys has two significant industrial areas: one along the Orange Line between Van Nuys and Sepulveda, and one along the Metrolink right-of-way.[1] For a shop or warehouse clearing out racks, pallets and old fixtures over a few days, a bin on the lot works well once the property owner approves the spot.
Van Nuys bin prep
- Get the owner's or manager's OK for the exact spot in the lot or driveway.
- Keep tenants' assigned spaces clear, and post a note that the bin is project-only.
- Schedule LA Sanitation appliance or Move-In/Move-Out pickups before demo starts.
- Plan to call for pickup the day the last debris is loaded.
- Set aside paint, batteries and electronics for the Randall St. S.A.F.E. Center.
When a crew beats a bin
If the job is a tenant's leftover furniture, a storage room of old stuff or a single move-out, there's no debris being created over days, so a bin mostly sits there. A crew carries everything out, down the stairs if needed, and leaves with it the same visit. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common.
We're based on Victory Blvd in North Hollywood, a few miles east of Van Nuys. Text us photos of the unit or the pile and the address, and we'll say whether a bin or a pickup is the better deal.

Questions
Do you deliver bins in Van Nuys?
Yes. Van Nuys is a City of LA neighborhood, including ZIPs 91405 and 91406, and we rent 15-yard and 20-yard bins there. Rental length, weight limits and price are confirmed when you book. Tell us the address, the spot you have in mind and what's going in, and we'll confirm the size and a delivery day.
I own a small apartment building. Is a bin right for a unit turnover?
Often, yes. A turnover with new flooring, cabinets or drywall produces debris over several days, which is exactly what a bin is for. Put it in the lot or driveway where it won't block tenants' spaces, and tell residents it's only for the project. If the unit is just full of a former tenant's belongings, a one-visit crew may be quicker.
How do I keep neighbors from filling my bin?
Place it on your property rather than the street when you can, keep the fill period short and call for pickup as soon as the project is done. Under California law, dumping waste on private property without the owner's consent is unlawful. If someone dumps near your building, report it through MyLA311 or at 800-773-2489.
What should I do with all the moving boxes?
Don't fill a bin with them. LA Sanitation's Move-In/Move-Out pickup takes boxes and bags on trash day for homes it services, if you call at least one business day ahead. Bundles must be under 30 pounds and 2 by 3 feet, with cardboard flattened and tied. That keeps the bin free for heavier debris.
Do you rent bins to businesses in the Van Nuys industrial areas?
Yes, with the property owner's OK for a spot on the lot. Van Nuys has two industrial zones, one along the Orange Line between Van Nuys and Sepulveda and one along the Metrolink tracks. LA Sanitation's free bulky pickup covers homes of one to four units, so a business needs a private option for bulky items.
