LA's free bulky item pickup vs. private junk removal: when each makes sense

, updated

The City of LA will take your old couch away for free, and if you qualify and can wait, that's usually the smart move. The catch is the word "qualify." Plenty of people in the Valley aren't sure whether their address is actually in the City, so start there.

Step one: are you in the City of LA?

A Los Angeles mailing address doesn't settle it. The County's official list of communities inside the City of LA includes North Hollywood, Valley Village, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake, Van Nuys, Sun Valley, Encino, Tarzana, Reseda, Northridge, Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Sylmar, West Hills and Woodland Hills, among others.[1] If you live in one of those, you're in City territory.

Universal City is the one that trips people up. It's on the County's list of unincorporated areas, not the City's,[2] and County departments provide municipal services there, so don't assume City programs like LASAN pickup apply.[3]

Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena are separate cities with their own programs and rules: see Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena.

Step two: does your building get LASAN service?

Being in the City isn't quite enough. LASAN's free, no-limit bulky pickup covers the homes it services, and its single-family pages describe those as buildings with 1 to 4 units.[4] If you're in a larger apartment building with its own trash hauler, ask the property manager what that hauler offers before you book anything with the City.

The three-question test

If you passed both checks, answer these:

  1. Can it wait for trash day? Pickup happens on your regular collection day, and the request has to be in at least one business day before.[4]
  2. Can you name every item? The crew only takes what's on that day's work order, so an item you forgot to list can stay behind.[5]
  3. Can you get it to the curb? The program is a curbside one.[4] The couch in the upstairs bedroom is your job until it's outside.

Three yeses: book the City. Our LA bulky item pickup guide has the booking steps, and what LA bulky pickup won't take covers the items that get left behind.

When a paid hauler earns its fee

Any "no" above is where a hauler starts to make sense. Typical cases: a lease ends before the next trash day, the heavy piece is on the second floor, or the pile mixes furniture with boxes and yard debris that would take several trips to sort. Same-day service most days when you reach us by early afternoon; next-morning slots are common.

It's also fine to split the job. Put the curb-ready items out for the City and have a crew handle only what's left. The full comparison of city pickup and a private hauler lines up cost, lead time and exclusions across all four cities.
